Death

Bro. James McClair, Past Master, Worshipful Senior Warden.

It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of Bro. Jim McClair and, although we knew that he had been fighting a terrible illness, the loss of a Brother held in high esteem as a Past Master of the Lodge and holding the high Office of W.S.W. is a loss deeply felt by all our members. Jim joined Lodge St. Bryde on 22nd. May 1985, having been proposed and seconded by Bro. George and Lindsay Cuthbertson and he followed other family members into the Craft. He progressed through the Offices in the Lodge to become R.W.M. in 1992, Bros. Ronnie McCarney and Jim Vasey being his Installing Masters. Jim was an excellent Degree worker and was soon tempted back into Office and was at his death our Worshipful Senior Warden. He was also skilled in the works of Robert Burns and was often called to recite  poems. Jim and his wife Bridie were great supporters of the Lodge social evenings and our sincere sympathy is extended to the McClair Family at this time.

Digital Records Project.

Recently our Brethren approved a recommendation that we raise funds to have our Lodge minute books digitally copied. This project has begun and the first four minute books are now completed and DVD`s are available to order. The 4 minute books cover the period from 1875, which contains minutes from meetings held prior to our Charter being in February 1876 to just after the first World War ended in 1918. The computer programme allows pages to be brought up and can be scrolled and zoomed to give greater detail. Our plan is to raise Funds for this project to complete all our minute books and to date the figure stands at over £500. When the Fund raising reaches £1000 we will proceed with the next four books. Our Lodge is now at the forefront of this major Grand Lodge project which encourages Lodges to preserve their records in this way. Our Lodge Roll Book has also been digitised and copies are now available to members at the cost of a donation to the Lodge D.R.P. Fund. stands at over £500. Another project which is running in parallel is the Oral History Project. This involves digitally recording interviews with members of Lodges who have a story to tell about their time as a member of the Craft. One of the first minutes of our Lodge has been printed from the DVD`s to give an example of the detail that can be obtained. This minute is historically important as it records the fact that our Lodge was formed at a Public Meeting ! Ours is believed to be the only known Scottish Lodge which was formed in this way.

DEATH.

Bro. Alexander McK. Dunlop J.P.

At the first meeting after the recess the R.W.M. sadly announced the death of Bro. Alex Dunlop, the oldest member of the Lodge at the age of 91 years. Bro. Alex, the father of WSW Bro. Alasdair Dunlop, was Initiated into the Lodge at the age of 30 on 26th. May 1948. His studies to be an  accountant took him away from the Lodge in those early years but he did audit the Lodge books for a few years and he became more active when Alasdair joined the Lodge. He supported Alasdair well and was Bible-bearer and Substitute Master in the respective years before and when Alasdair was RWM for the first time. Bro. Alex was presented with a Jubilee Certificate on two occasions, for 50 years  membership and just last year for 60 years membership of the Lodge. He had been a dedicated Member and Treasurer of  Bothwell Royal Arch Chapter for a number of years. He had also been an active member of Bothwell Golf Club and Uddingston Bowling Club.

Lodge Tollcross No. 1194. Lodge Tollcross No. 1194 will celebrate 90 years since receiving the Lodge Charter  on 7th. August 1919. As part of the celebrations the Lodge will hold a Reigning Masters Degree on Thursday 29th. October 2009. Our Right Worshipful Master, Bro. Norman McKee and the Church Session have agreed that our Lodge can once again have an Annual Divine Service in Uddingston Old Parish Church. The Service will take place on Sunday 25th. October 2009 at 6 for 6.30pm. As Rev.  Norman McKee will retire in June 2010, this will be possibly the last A.D.S. that he will conduct for our Lodge. The R.W.M. Bro. David Shaw would like a good attendance of our Brethren to be present at the Service in recognition of the support that Rev. McKee has given our Lodge over many years.

ARTICLE

Bro. Bob Stirling is a well respected Past Master and current Secretary of Lodge Motherwell Caledonian No. 1228, he is also very active in Provincial Grand Lodge and is currently Provincial Grand Jeweller.

A number of years ago Bob`s eyesight began to fail, but throughout these years his spirit has never failed and he has indeed been an inspiration to others. Eight years ago he penned an article for the Right Angle and we are indeed fortunate that Bob has again contributed to our Magazine.

Let there be light That was the title of the first article that I submitted to this eloquent and informative magazine and believe it or not, that was eight busy years ago.

Let there be light, that well known phrase but, one with many different connotations,  For example I, Bob Stirling, have seen the light even though I am registered blind, I have experienced the light of human decency from many quarters, more especially from Brethren within the Brotherhood of Free Masonry.

I have no intention of naming these individual as they do not want to be thanked for, after all, they are only practising what they preach in their Masonic teachings.

With the help of these Brethren I have been able to do things that I, for one, never thought a blind person could or even would do. Can you imagine a Sword Bearer who is blind?

Well I was that man and I can guarantee that Provincial Grand Master, Bro. James L Jack found he had a clear and unobstructed path when he entered the Lodge room with me wielding an open sword in front of him.

Since that first article way back in September 2001 I have been, and am currently, Secretary of Lodge Motherwell Caledonian No.1228, I have been Installing Master in my Mother Lodge and my affiliated Lodge in Edinburgh, where I am currently Substitute Master, and for three consecutive years Installed the Master of one Lodge and the Office Bearers of the other Lodge.

I hope that no one is of the impression that I am blowing my own trumpet, so to speak, all I am trying to do is to impress on the doubting Thomas’s of this world what can be done once they accept the challenges that life can throw your way.

Life can be very hard and as we read, “to steer the bark of this life over the rough sea of passion without quitting the helm of rectitude  is the highest degree of perfection to which human nature is capable of attaining” it says to me, make the best of what you have and think of those worse off than yourself. Freemasonry seems to be in a sort of      downward spiral at the moment, I don’t know the reason or even the answer, does anyone? I would only say to those who are feeling sorry for them selves and can’t be bothered, shake it off and face each day as it comes,  remember the Lodge is what you make it.

Mr.Barrie, Consultant Ophthalmologist at ,what was then, the Glasgow Eye Infirmary, after he had delivered the crushing blow that nothing more could be done to save my sight, made a remark which at the time I thought was rather obnoxious, to say the least, and that was that the only thing a blind person cannot do is see. Remarkable statement don’t you think? and do you know, he was correct as I have since discovered .

In my case it is true that your remaining senses do compensate for the loss of another and you develop a feeling, pardon the pun, of what you want to do and the way to do it. I remember a pupil at the Edinburgh school for the Blind, who had been blind from birth, when asked what would be the first task she would tackle if she was given sight and she replied that she would only know what things were by touching, smelling or hearing as that was her world of recognition as I said other senses compensate to help you along the way.

As I remarked in my first article that I am no longer privileged to enjoy the scenery of my native country but I have a good memory, compensating again,

I no longer drive but I can still guide folk home, in the dark, memory again and the sensation of movement .eg roundabouts gradients and left and right are basically the same so there you are, You don’t have to see when something is burning, aroma takes over and a good way of revising ritual is to listen to a good speaker, sound takes over, compensate again.

All in all when things are said and done you have to take the good with the bad and make the best of it, remember no matter how bad you think things are for you there is always someone worst off,

To finish off my little article, I , with the grace of the G A, will be receiving my 50 years membership in March next year, I will not see my Certificate but I shall compensate, I shall hold it I shall feel it and I shall cherish it because I know it is there  .

February 2009

American Visit by Bro James Jack PM.   Last month I visited Virginia primarily to attend the Installation of Bro. Wayne Price as Master of CWLR No. 1865 but we took in a few other meetings on the way !.We first attended the Regular Meeting of Mount Jackson Lodge No. 103 in Mount Jackson where I gave a short talk on   Freemasonry in Scotland . It was a great pleasure to see Bro. Wayne Price wearing his Provincial Regalia and Bro. Raymond Steele wearing his Lodge St. Bryde Regalia. These Brethren would be most supportive of their P.G.M. throughout the visit. Next stop was to Unity Lodge No. 146 in Front Royal where I was well received by the Brethren who remembered the Lecture that I gave in the Lodge in 2003. The Civil War Lodge of Research No. 1865 Installation was on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Strasburg. Bro. Wayne Price was duly Installed as Master and made glowing  reference to his Scottish “Masonic roots”. I was overwhelmed by the fellowship of the Brethren of 1865 who came from all over America - all experts in the Civil War and most wearing Civil War uniforms. Bro. Wayne explained that at a previous meeting of the Lodge it was agreed that I be granted Honorary  Membership, this was approved by The Grand Lodge of Virginia.

This was a great Honour as their Honorary Membership is the equivalent of our Distinguished Service Membership. A lunch  followed and then a visit to the Cedar Creek Battlefield.

An Installation on a Sunday afternoon ? This was certainly a first for me, but this was the custom in Federal Lodge No. 1 in Washington D.C. The Installation was in the magnificent building which is the International Headquarters of the Eastern Star. I was delighted to be introduced to the Grand Master of The District of Columbia at the meeting. On Monday we attended the Regular Meeting of  Potomac Lodge No.5 in Georgetown . The chequered tile carpet was originally in the Capitol Building and was obtained during a renovation of the building. Bro. President Harry Truman used to visit the Lodge when he was in Washington . On Tuesday  we  visited the Grand Lodge and met Grand Secretary, in the evening we attended the Installation of Temple-Noyes-Cathedral Lodge No. 32. Again we were well received by the Brethren of the Lodge and it was a excellent way to finish off a busy Masonic Tour .

History Made ! A number of Brethren from our Lodge attended the Installation of Lodge Girvan St. John`s No. 237 on Saturday 17th. January in the Masonic Hall, Girvan. This was a special event in the history of our Lodge St. Bryde No. 579, in that one of our members, Bro. Robert Laird was    Installed as Right Worshipful Master. What made the event so special was that Bro. Laird was the third member of Lodge St. Bryde to be Installed as Master of a Lodge this year ! The others being Bro. David Shaw, the Right Worshipful Master of Lodge St. Bryde No. 579, Bro. Wayne Price , the Right   Worshipful Master of The Civil War Lodge of Research No. 1865 in Virginia and of course Bro. Robert Laird, Right Worshipful Master of Lodge Girvan St. John`s No. 237. What a year for our Lodge ! We look forward to Bro. Wayne Price returning to visit 579 in March of this year and he may wear his Civil War uniform as Master of the Research Lodge and also Bro. Bobby Laird will visit as Master of Girvan St. John`s during his term.

February 2008

Congratulations.

Two well-known members of the Lodge, John Stormont Dick and James Weir MacLennan (Ian and Jim), received Honorary Life Membership of the Lodge after faithfully paying their Test Fees annually for 21 consecutive years.

The Proposer and Seconder of Ian was PM Bro. Ian Pew and PM Bro. Andrew Mason respectively, whilst for Jim it was Bro. Scott Moore and Bro. Ian Cowan. They went through all of their Degrees together beginning with their Initiation on the 8th January 1986, the year that the R.W.M. was Bro. Ronnie McCarney. Their three Degrees were all conferred by Degree teams from within the Lodge but their Mark Degree in October of that year was  conferred by visiting Lodge Bothwell Brig No. 1229.

Jim has held various Offices within the Lodge over these years, varying from Junior Steward to Depute Master, and has carried out Degree work for the Lodge. Ian, on the other hand, has only been persuaded to take Office in the Lodge once when he was 3rd Steward twenty years ago. Both brethren have been excellent attenders at Lodge meetings and it is never to late to hope that one or both of them will eventually aspire to the Chair of the Lodge.

Both have been close friends over the years and great supporters of the Lodge socially, particularly at the Friday Lounge nights, and also with their wives at the various socials and functions of the Lodge held over the past 25 years. It could also be said that both are founder members of the famous Advance Party, which sets off a day earlier than the Lodge deputation at our annual weekend away to visit Lodges in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

We wish both Ian and Jim well in their continuing support of the Lodge and are proud to have them as Honorary Life Members of their Mother Lodge.

Historic Meeting? Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 visit Lodge Garrowhill No. 1413 on Monday 4th. February to confer a F.C. Degree. It is thought that this may be the first official visit by 579 to Lodge Garrowhill No. 1413 to work a Degree. Bro. David Shaw, W.S.W. and his Team will confer the Degree and the Right Worshipful Master has requested that a large Deputation be present on this historic occasion.

Bro. James Vasey, P.M. will present a Lecture on    Mozart at Lodge Kirkhill No. 1230 on Thurs. 14th. Feb., it would be great if our members could support Bro. Jim on this occasion.

Provincial News.

Installation. Fantastic ! That was the general reaction to the effort by 579 Members in organising the Provincial A.G.M. The attendance was 190, every seat was in the Hall, the collection was £320 and the Annual Draw made over £1,200. But it was the effort by our    Members that contributed greatly to the success of the meeting. Names need not be printed here, the Brethren who helped know that the  Provincial Grand Master is very proud to have such     Brethren from his Mother Lodge willing to help.

Unusually, because of work commitments he had to go through Applications, Enquiries and two Ballots! John has recently had some serious health problems, but with the help of Brethren of the Lodge he has been a very regular attender at our meetings.

Belgium Visit. Bro. James L. Jack, P.M. recently visited two Lodges in Belgium . Bahamas Visit 2007.

Our flight to Nassau arrived on time at 14.30 local time. We were met by Bro. Andrew Flowers, R.W.M. Elect. Of Lodge St. David No.1741 who had arranged transport to our hotel. Our first engagement was a beach party organised by the local Lodges at which we met old friends and their families. On Saturday, a Deputation headed by Bro. Calum Stewart, R.W.M., Lodge St. Enoch attended Lodge St. David No. 1741 Installation. Visitors included The District Grand Masters, Scottish & English constitution, The Grand Master of The Prince Hall Grand Lodge.

On Tuesday the Deputation visited Lodge St. Anne`s No. 1751 where the Brethren of Lodge St. Enoch conferred an excellent F.C. Degree on two Candidates.

Saturday and Sunday was taken up with the Food and Cultural Festival which I personally enjoyed. I assisted with the Scottish Section and was interviewed by local T.V.

On Monday, I visited Lodge Royal Eagle No. 1 of Prince Hall Masons of The Bahamas. This was the first time that I had visited a Prince Hall Lodge, which was quite different to a Scottish working. The Brethren from The Bahamas were with us in Uddingston and at The Grand Lodge Installation at the end of November.

Alasdair Dunlop, P.M.

November 2007

Bro. Pat Clarke, R.W.M. took part in the Lodge Woodhall St. John`s No. 305 Reigning Masters Degree on Friday 28th. September. Eight Reigning Masters Conferred an excellent F.C. Degree on one Candidate. Our R.W.M. filled the Office of Senior Deacon of the Team.

Bro. James L. Jack accompanied Lodge Robert Burns No. 440 to Lodge Regal No. 1422, Glasgow on Wed. 19th. September and much to his surprise was awarded Honorary Membership of Lodge Regal. This was a great personal honour as it is unusual for a P.G.M. to receive Honorary Membership from a Lodge out with his own Province.

579 Annual Dance, Saturday 6th. October 2007.   It has been a number of years since our Lodge held an Annual Dance, in fact it has been so long that no one seemed to be able to remember when the last dance was !

It was all down to the initiative and determination shown by our Right Worshipful Master, Bro. Pat Clarke in organising what was to be a super dance on Sat. 6th. Oct.

Bro. Pat Clarke, R.W.M. and his wife Margaret welcomed a company of around eighty and everything, the setting, meal, band were superb. It was also pleasing to see some our younger Office-bearers with their friends attending and    supporting their Mother Lodge.

It is in my opinion, vital that we try to maintain the momentum of the success of this years dance and plan a similar event for next year. The opportunity to bring friends from outwith our Lodge to a social function is too good an opportunity to miss, future members may be in our midst !

Visit to Lodge Mallaig No. 1056 Malliag, Inverness-shire. Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 will attend a Special Meeting of Lodge Mallaig No. 1056 on Saturday 15th. March 2008. Arrangements have been made by Bro. Ronnie McCarney, P.M. for our Deputation in the West Highland Hotel, Mallaig. The total cost of the trip will be approx. £55. If you are interested in attending the Deputation to Lodge Mallaig please give your name and a £20 deposit to Bro. McCarney by 30th. November 2007.

Lodge Mallaig No. 1059 is a small Highland Lodge of around 15 members which meets in the fishing town of Mallaig. The Lodge has managed to survive since 1909 and will celebrate its Centenary in 2009. The Lodge, because of its geographical position on the West Coast receives few visitors and the nearest Lodge is 45 miles away in Fort William. The visit by our Lodge will be a great moral boost as well as a financial boost which should set the Lodge on a sure footing into its Centenary Year.

Sponsored Walk. Lodge St. Bryde members, Norrie Telfer, Alex Hamilton, Stuart Jack, Ronnie McCarney, David Shaw and Jim Jack took part in a Sponsored Walk organised by Norrie Telfer to raise funds for the Provincial Grand Lodge New Caravan Project. The walk took place between our Hall and Lodge Robert Burns No. 440 Hall in Baillieston (and back). The walkers hope to raise approx. £300 for the New Caravan and if you would like to make a donation to the Sponsors total, please contact any of the above named or the Lodge Secretary.

Land Trust Visit. Bro. Pat Clarke, R.W.M. & Bro. Andrew McAlpine, Sec. met with representatives of the Trust which gave so generously to the major repairs which were carried out during the summer.

Hall Repairs. During the summer recess extensive works were undertaken by Contractors to make good a serious situation with dry rot. The work was completed in the   basement area affecting the main floor and in the main roof space. We were delighted that a grant covering the full cost of the work was received from the Land Trust and Pattersons Quarries. Additional works were also carried out on the West external wall.

This involved pointing work and roughcasting the main roof apex. The Lodge work party was busy during the recess and the Right Worshipful Master would like to thank all those Brethren of the Lodge who worked so hard to keep the Lodge looking so good.

Death

Bro. George Mason, Past Master.

It came as a great shock to us to learn of the sudden death in mid July of P.M. Bro. George Mason.  George joined the Lodge on the 25th November 1964 , his Proposer and Seconder being Bros. David and Isaac Rodney respectively, at the age of 24 years. He became very active in the Lodge ten years later when cousins Andrew and Jim applied to join the Lodge and all three were willing participants in the pre-centenary work party of 1975.

All three became Office bearers of the Lodge at that time with George, as the senior member of the three, leading the progression through the various Offices to become R.W.M. of the Lodge on the 28th November 1981 when his Installing Masters were Bros. James Scott P.M. and Andrew McAlpine P.M.

After his year as I.P.M. George became the Lodge Almoner, a position he held for the next seven years. He was also a Past President of the Uddingston Masonic Burns Club and was last present in the Masonic Hall at the 2007 Burns Supper. Over these many years George and his wife Helen were extremely involved in Lodge socials, entering into the spirit of the occasions, be they fancy dress competitions or Mr. and Mrs. competitions.

George was also an excellent singer and he was happy to oblige the company whatever the occasion.   George was an active member of Bothwell Bowling Club where he was a former Treasurer and Past President.   He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and the sympathy of the Lodge is with Helen and the Mason family.

The Lodge was well represented at the funeral.

Reigning Masters Degree. Lodge Woodhall St. John`s No. 395 have organised a Special Reigning Masters Degree on Friday 29th. September 2007 at 7.30 p.m. Our R.W.M. , Bro. Pat Clarke will take part in the Degree. Please support our R.W.M. on this occasion.

Visit to Capilano Lodge No. 164 Vancouver , Canada .

By Bro Andrew McAlpine PM, Secy.

Whilst on holiday in Vancouver during the summer I took the opportunity to visit the above named Lodge, one of three Lodges who meet in the 1908 purpose built and imposing three storey Masonic Halls situated in the busy Lonsdale area of North Vancouver

The Lodge name Capilano has a nostalgic connection. It means 'rushing water' in the language of the Native Indian tribe, the Squamish, who occupied the Capilano District in North Vancouver B.C. Canada . The Capilano River runs through the District and the world famous Capilano   Suspension Bridge spans the river. The term 'rushing water' should remind us all of that part in the 2nd Degree Lecture.

The Native Indian connection does not stop there as all visitors to the Lodge are greeted with the characteristic Native Indian whooping sound and are also given a totem pole pin badge!

It turned out to be a very busy meeting with the business of the evening being the reception of a large deputation from the Grand Lodge of British Columbia and the Yukon . After the deputation had been received the Director of Ceremonies brought to the edge of the carpet two overseas visitors, from England and Scotland . When I introduced  myself I spoke briefly of my masonic career and when I mentioned that I have been Lodge Secretary for 27 years I was surprised to be given a spontaneous round of applause. The Lodge Master, resplendent in top hat, and Bro. Stephen Godfrey, the new Grand Master who headed his deputation, came down to welcome us.

It was an excellent evening and there are always a number of Scots in Canadian Lodges to make you very welcome.

Perhaps this is why the first overseas trip for the new Grand Master and his forty-strong deputation is to Scotland in May 2008. I look forward to meeting up with them during that visit.

May 2007

Lodge Dance. Members of the Lodge are keen to have a Lodge Dance this year - if there is sufficient interest ! The date proposed is Saturday 6th. October 2007 and there is a list on the notice board on which Brethren and visitors can append their name. This is an early attempt to gauge reaction prior to making all the arrangements. We believe the time is right to revive the Lodge Annual Dance.

Grant Approved. The great news is that The Land Trust has approved the Lodge application for financial assistance with the major works required to be carried out on the main roof and west floor of the Hall.

Members will remember the report carried out by Rentokil into the deterioration of some the main joists resulted in an estimated £15,000 repair bill. Application was made by Bro. Andrew McAlpine our Lodge Secretary to the Land Trust seeking a grant in support for the cost of the works and the fantastic news is that we have received a 100% grant. Arrangements are being made to have the extensive work carried out in June of this year during the Lodge recess.  Our thanks are extended to Andrew McAlpine and all those who worked so hard to secure this grant which will ensure that our Lodge funds are not depleted and that the fabric our Temple remains sound.

Fortrose Visit. Bro. Pat Clarke, Right Worshipful Master led a 54 strong Deputation which included a five strong Deputation from Provincial Grand Lodge headed by Bro. James L. Jack, P.G.M.  to Lodge Seaforth No. 854, Fortrose on Saturday 14th. April. The date was significant in that it was almost ten years to the day that Lodge St. Bryde first visited Lodge Seaforth, on that occasion a very proud Maxwell McGhie (who was our oldest member at that time) led the Deputation from his Mother Lodge into his Adopted Lodge.

Bro. Pat Clarke, R.W.M. introduced Bro. Bob Abercrombie, P.M. and his Team of Past Masters. The experienced Team of Lodge Past Masters conferred an    excellent F.C. Degree on one Candidate. After the meeting Lodge Seaforth members   provided a splendid    dinner for the visitors followed by the traditional Harmony.  Our thanks to Bro. Ronnie McCarney who organised the trip and made the arrangements with The National Hotel in Dingwall and even arranged for Airdrie to be playing the local team Ross County on Saturday afternoon in Dingwall !

Annual Divine Service.  Over 220 Brethren attended the A.D.S. in The Old Parish Church, Uddingston on Sunday 29th. April. The Service was conducted by Rev. Norman McKee and Bro. Rev. Peter O. Price, Senior Provincial Grand Lodge Chaplain. Twenty eight Right Worshipful Masters also attended the Service in addition to the P.G.M.`s of Glasgow, Lanarkshire (Upper Ward), Rox., Peeb. & Selkirk and E. Lothian & Berwickshire.

Other News

Platinum Certificate. Bro. James L. Jack, P.G.M. attended the Regular Meeting of Lodge Robert Burns No. 440 on 26th. April for a very special presentation. Bro. Archibald Frew  was celebrating 70 years as a member of Lodge Robert Burns No. 440. The Grand Lodge issued a Special Platinum Certificate which was presented to Bro. Archie by his Grandsons Bro. Martin Sweeten, W.S.W. and Bro. Gary Sweeten, W.J.W. of 440.  The Lodge also presented a special jewel to Bro. Frew to mark his long membership of the Lodge.

Important Jewels Returned.  Two Provincial Grand Lodge jewels which belonged to the late Bro. Alex MacGregor of 440 have been returned to the Lodge. His Past Provincial Grand Masters jewel and his Past Senior  Provincial Grand Wardens jewel are now on display within the Lodge.

April 2007

Mallaig. Bro. Pat Clarke, R.W.M., accompanied by Past Masters Bros. Jim McClair and Bob Edgar attended the Regular Meeting of Lodge Mallaig No. 1056 in Mallaig on 10th. March.

The Brethren travelled to support Bro. James L. Jack who had been invited by Bro. William Anderson, R.W.M. to present a Lecture on Freemasons at Gettysburg . Bro. Anderson is a Past Master of Cambuslang Royal Arch No. 114 and was delighted at the number of Brethren from our Province who had made the journey to attend. Lodge Mallaig meets in the Local Public Hall and has no immediate Sister Lodges in the area (the nearest being Fort William which is 45 miles away) and as such does not get many visitors.

The average attendance of 15 was boosted to 45 for our visit and the collection taken was probably the equivalent of the annual total !

New Member. Frank McAuley is the latest addition to the Roll Book of the Lodge. Frank is a forty one year old Childcare Manager who resides in Greenock . He formally lived in Motherwell. His Proposer is Bro. Alistair Oattes and his Seconder is Bro. John Macleod. By a curious co-incidence regular visitor Bro. Andrew McAllister stays   almost around the corner from Frank in Greenock !

New Life Members. Bro. Wayne Price and Bro. Raymond Steele from Virginia who are  Affiliate Members of our Lodge have paid Life Membership Fees to our Lodge. This is a wonderful gesture by our two American Brethren who are very proud of their Scottish connection.

Central South Africa .

Last month, Bro. Bob Law, District Grand Master of Central South Africa visited our Province with a Deputation of twelve Brethren from South Africa . I have received an E mail from Bro. Bob thanking the Brethren of our Province for the fellowship and friendship that the visitors received during their stay.

The Deputation visited Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 on two occasions, firstly at our Regular Meeting on Wednesday 22nd. November and again at the Annual  Installation of Office-bearers on Saturday 25th. November 2006.

The District Grand Master and visiting Brethren were full of praise for the Brethren of Lodge St. Enoch No. 1288 who conferred the M.M. at our Regular Meeting and were most impressed by Bro. Bruce and Gordon Reidford who were our Installing Masters.

The Ceremonial was quite different from the Installed Masters Ritual used in South Africa and was greatly enjoyed by the Brethren. The South African Brethren were also in our company on many occasions during their stay, including the 125th. Anniversary of Lodge St. Andrew No. 668 and the Grand Lodge Installation and Festival of St. Andrew.

He was a veteran of the Second World War and enjoyed telling      stories of his time in the Royal Navy, the younger members of the Lodge were awe struck when he described his ship being torpedoed in the Indian Ocean (twice). Andrew will be sadly missed, but will not be forgotten by the members of our Lodge.
