Burns Supper Report. The Uddingston Masonic Burns Club No. 237 Annual Burns Supper was again a  tremendous success. Immediate Past President, Bill Perry deputised for Club President Bob Edgar who was in hospital. 

The Supper got off to a great start with an address to the Haggis by Bro. William Anderson an excellent meal was presented before the programme which was arranged by members of Lodge Cambuslang Royal Arch No. 114 sparked into life. Angus Ross proposed the Immortal Memory, Bro. James Torrance, Tae The Lassies, Reply by Mrs. Margaret Ross. Readings and Songs by Bros. William Anderson and Ian Caskie.

Bro. James L. Jack, Past Secretary of the Club, addressed the company and detailed the considerable contribution that Bro. Bill Perry, Immediate Past President had made during his term as President of the Club. 

 

Such was the progress that the Club had made, that we were in a position to    sponsor a local Lanarkshire Youth Burns Competition with a donation of £600. This is a tremendous gesture by our members and fulfils one of our long term objectives to support a local community project. 

Bro. Jack presented Bro. Bill Perry with his Past Presidents jewel and a Certificate to mark his very successful term in Office. In reply, Bro. Perry praised the efforts of the members who had made the evening and many previous evenings so successful. He congratulated Bro. Pat Clarke, Secretary for organising the event and the many members and friends who had donated raffle prizes etc.

Annual Burns Supper Report

 

 

Bro. Bill Perry, President presided over the Annual Supper on Saturday 5th. February. The event was a sell out with 110 members and guests  present. The evening got off to a great start with the talented young piper John Ryan Piping in the Haggis accompanied by Scott Moore and Bobby Abercrombie. 

Andrew McAlpine addressed the Haggis in an excellent manner in what was his first attempt. Gordon Reidford presented The Selkirk Grace and the company enjoyed a hearty meal. 

The Baudrans Team presented a sketch from their famous Rantin Rovin Robin Production which was well received by the company. 

Peter Mitchell of 440 gave the reading “Holy Wullies Prayer” in a silent hall with only a candle light. 

David Ross also of 440 presented a tremendous Immortal Memory for only the second time. David`s talent was well received by the Company and we hope that he will return to our Annual Supper in the future. 

Andy Quinn was a new comer to our Supper but his reading of Tam O` Shanter was arguably one of the best that we have heard. 

Bob Edgar proposed the Toast to The Lassies in a  humorous manner (under the watchful eye of  Rona). Lorraine Perry skilfully replied on behalf of the Ladies, this was the first time that she had “spoken in public”. Well done!  

The beautiful voice of Sian Ross rounded off the evening as she entertained the company with her favourite Burns Songs. 

Bruce Reidford  proposed the Toast to the Artists in his usual humorous manner.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bro. Bill Perry then introduced Walter Watson, President of The Burns World Federation. It was a great honour for the Club that The World President was present at our Supper and he congratulated everyone who had been involved in the organisation  for their splendid efforts. 

 

Bro. Bill Perry also took the opportunity to intimate his intention to stand down after three great years as our President. 

 

 

Jan  2005

Uddingston Masonic Burns Club.

Bro. William Perry, President extends a warm welcome to all Members and Friends to the Annual Supper which will feature the Baudwins Production Rantin`Rovin`Robin. The Supper will take place in The Temple on Saturday 5th. February 2005 at 6.30pm.

Oct 2004

Plans for the 2005 Annual Supper are well in hand. The date has been fixed for Saturday 5th. February 2005 in the Masonic Hall and the price has been again pegged at £10. 2005 is an important year for the Club as it has agreed to sponsor an event at the Annual Burns Festival at a cost of around £500. We hope that a Committee Member of the Federation will be present at the Supper. Next Meeting. Bro. Bill Perry, President invites all members and friends to the next meeting of the Club which will be held on Friday 10th. September at 8pm in the Temple, Gardenside St.

Any Brother who is interested in the works of Robert Burns is cordially invited to the meeting.

 

April 2004

Bro. Bill Perry, President of the Club invites all members to the Annual General Meeting which will be held in The Masonic Temple, Uddingston on Friday 30th. April at 8pm. Business will include Election of Office Bearers for 2004/05, review and report of 2004 Supper, early plans for 2005 Supper and importantly correspondence from the Federation inviting our Club to sponsor a major event in 2005. If you are interested in the works of Robert Burns and would like to join our Burns Club then please feel free to attend on 30th. April you will be made most welcome. 

 

 

March 2004

"That was the best Burns Supper we`ve ever had" someone said, the reply was "you said that last year". It has become a fact that as our Burns Club goes from strength to strength, the Annual Suppers seem to get better and better!

Bro. Bill Perry, President welcomed guests, introduced the "top table" and hoped that everyone enjoyed the occasion. David Stark piping in the Haggis, carried by Scott Moore and Bobby Abercrombie. Past President,

Andrew Martin gave an excellent address and Alex Hamilton the Selkirk Grace before everyone sat down to an excellent meal. 

The evening got off to a great start with Gordon Mather reading Holy Wullies Prayer, Archie Cowie proposed an excellent Immortal Memory before Gordon Mather returned with an astonishing rendition of Tam O`Shanter. In between these gauns on George Donaldson sang Burns' beautiful songs. Back into the swing of the night with Alex Dick toasting an excellent Tae The Lassies replied to by the superb Helen Morrison. Donaldson again obliged the company before Gordon Mather led everyone in The Star O` Rabbie Burns. Bruce Reidford, Vice President concluded the evening with a toast To the Artists.

In his closing remarks Bro. Bill Perry, President, thanked all those who had contributed to making the event such a success. The committee had worked hard in the overall planning and this planning and effort had been rewarded by the success of the evening.  The evening was also special in that Walter Watson, Vice President and Helen Morrison of the World Federation were present. They were most enthusiastic about our club and looked forward to a return visit.

It was the best Burns Supper we have ever had!  

News.

The Club is keen to sponsor a childrens event which the World Federation run on an annual basis. This would be a great acheivement for the Club if this sponsorship could be arranged and it would propel the Club into the world Burns scene.

Bro. James L. Jack, Acting Chairman welcomed members to the Regular Meeting of the Club.

The business of the Annual General Meeting was approved and Bro. Jack praised the Office Bearers and Members for their efforts in making our Club one of the most successful in the country.

2004 Supper. Arrangements were well in hand for the 2004 supper which would be held on Saturday 7th. February 2004 at 6.30pm. prompt.  Tickets priced £10 would be limited to 100.

Next Meeting. The next meeting of the Club would be on Friday 16th. January 2004 at 8pm. in the Masonic Temple, Uddingston.

 

 

Sept 2003

Preparations have begun for the 2004 Annual Burns Supper which will take place on Saturday, 7th. February 2004. Bro. Bill Perry, President welcomes all Brethren who are interested in the life and works of Robert Burns to join the oldest Masonic Burns Club in the world. The Club will hold its next meeting on Friday 12th. September 2003 in the Temple at 8pm. and new members can join for £2.00. The Club also plan to have a visit to Burns Cottage and Museum planned for later in the year and this will also be discussed. Members are reminded that the £2 Annual Fee is now due to the Club Secretary Pat Clarke.

The Annual General Meeting  of the Club will be held on Friday, 25th. April 2003 at 8pm. in the Masonic Hall, Uddingston.

May 2003

Annual General Meeting Report.

Bro. Bill Perry, Chairman welcomed members to the A.G.M. on Friday 25th. April. Bro. Pat Clarke outlined the Club accounts and reported a very healthy balance in the Bank. The present Office Bearers, Bill Perry, Chairman, Bruce Reidford, Vice Chairman, and Pat Clarke, Secretary were unanimously re-elected into Office. The Chairman warmly thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the 2003 Annual Supper such a success. The date for the 2004 Annual Supper was set for Saturday, 7th. February and arrangements were well in hand for the popular social function. Members also discussed the possibility of a trip to Burns Cottage and Museum later this year and the dinner on the return. 

This would be discussed further at the next meeting which was scheduled for Friday 12th. September 2003 at 8pm.

The Secretary reminded Members that the £2 Annual Fee was now due.

March 2003

Burns Supper Report. Bro. William Perry, President welcomed a large company of members and friends to the Annual Supper which was held on 8th. February in the Masonic Hall. The programme was a well selected blend of some of our own club members and visitors who had been invited to entertain.

The Haggis was piped in by David Stark, P.G. Piper, assisted by Bob Edgar & Bobby Abercrombie, WSW &WJW. Andrew Martin, Immediate Past President addressed the Haggis in his usual splendid manner. The company the enjoyed an excellent Fare which was followed by two presentations. Firstly, Bill Perry, President presented a Past Presidents certificate and jewel to Andrew Martin. Andrew had been President from 1998 to 2002 and had led the Burns Club out of a very difficult period in the Club`s history.

Under his leadership the Club flourished to it`s present healthy position. The President then called on Jim Jack to present Billy Steel with an Honorary Membership certificate and jewel. Billy had been very supportive of the Club over a number of years and was unanimously elected the second Hon. member. Later, Billy proposed the Immortal Memory which was a fitting tribute to the Bard.

Jane Ross who had been specially invited, sang beautifully and her sense of humour kept the company entertained - superb! Our own Members were in great form, Tom Huxtable who had only just joined the Club gave Willie Wastle, Bob Smith, Hon. Member read Tam O` Shanter and Douglas Welsh read Death and Dr. Hornbrook - all in an excellent fashion. 

The Artistes and President

The Toast to the Lassies was given by Bruce Reidford, Vice President who had the company roaring with laughter at some of his lines. Jane Ross gave a reply on behalf of the Lassies which was well thought out and skilfully delivered. Ronnie McCarney proposed the Toast to the Artists and in his usual manner had the company in stitches.

In his closing remarks Bill Perry, President thanked all those who had organised the evening, which had been again a tremendous success. At the close all the company joined in Auld Lang Syne.  

 

 

December 2002

Bro. Bill Perry, Chairman has intimated that the next Meeting of the Club will take place on Friday, 17th. January 2003 at 8pm. in our Temple in Gardenside Street. 

At this meeting final arrangements will be made for the 2003 Supper, a good turn out of Members is requested.

The Annual Supper will be held on Saturday, 8th. February 2003.  Tickets to be sold out soon - so make sure that you get yours!  

 

 

May 2002

A.G.M. Bro. Andrew Martin, Chairman welcomed a good number of members

to the Annual General Meeting on Friday, 26th. April. Bro. Bruce Reidford,

Secretary gave an account of the years proceedings and paid tribute to all those who had contributed to the success of the Annual Supper which was held in February. Financially the Club is in a very healthy position, although some members have still to pay their £2 membership.

The 2003 Annual Supper was discussed and the detail would be finalised at a future meeting. Office Bearers. Bro. Andrew Martin intimated to the members that he would continue as Chairman, since moving house to the Isle of Arran he has attended the meetings regularly. Bro. Bruce Reidford, Secretary congratulated Andrew on his Chairmanship of the Club since it had been re established and under his leadership the Club had gone from strength to strength. Bro. Andrew stated that he was delighted that the Club had progressed so well and the quality of the Annual Supper was superb and now had a complement of over 100 attending.

Office Bearers were elected Bill Perry, Vice Chairman, Bruce Reidford, Secretary and it was hoped that they would receive the support of the membership. Charity Burns Night.

Two years ago the Baudwins production of Rantin, Rovin, Robin featured as the mainstay of the Annual Supper. This was a departure from the traditional supper

and this was greatly appreciated by the members. Our members from Lodge Robert Burns No. 440 have arranged to stage an extended production of the play in the premises of Lodge Robert Burns on Saturday 5th. October 2002. All proceeds of this Supper will be donated to Charity.

ANNUAL SUPPER 2002

Bro. Andrew Martin, President welcomed 110 members and friends to the Annual Supper held in the Masonic Temple on 2nd. February. The Supper this year took the form of a traditional Burns Supper and the guest speakers were arranged by Bro. Alex Dick, Substitute Provincial Grand Master.

 

Presentation. Prior to the start of Supper Bro. Bob Edgar presented the Club with a beautiful knife on behalf of his family. The knife is specially engraved and will be used at the Address to the Haggis. It can be seen in the display cabinet.

 

Supper. The Haggis was piped in by Bro. David Stark, P.G. Piper ably assisted by Bros. Bob Edgar and Bob Abercrombie. The Address to the Haggis was given

by Bro. Alex Dick and set the tone for a great evening. After the meal the company were entertained by the fine voices of Gavin Stewart and William Marshall. The Immortal Memory was presented in a splendid manner by Jim Jamieson and was one of the best heard at our Club.

John Rattary proposed the Toast to the Lassies, but the star of the night was our own member Douglas Welsh who gave the reading Death and Dr. Hornbook. Word perfect Douglas was in great form and we look forward to hearing him again.

 

Federation Guest. The Club was honoured by the visit of Murdo Morrison of the Worldwide Burns Federation who addressed the company and gave an insight into the work of the Federation, which included a childrens school project which promoted Burns works to around 160,000 school children annually. He complimented the Committee of the Club for an excellent evenings entertainment and looked forward to being invited back. He said that the Club would feature in his report to the Federation. Vice President. Bro. Bill Perry addressed the company for the first time in his capacity as Vice President of the Club and proposed the Toast to the Guests. At the conclusion of the Supper the company were led in The Star of Rabbie Burns by Gavin Stewart and joined together round the Hall for Auld Lang Syne.

 

Special. A Special Uddingston Masonic Burns Club Charity Supper featuring

the Baudwins Production of Rantin` Rovin` Robin is planned for July in The Masonic Temple, Baillieston - more details later !

 

Next Meeting. The next Meeting of the Club will be held in the Hall on Friday, 26th. April at 8pm. New Members welcome.

 

Annual Dues. £2 Annual Members Dues are now due to be paid to Bro. Bruce Reidford Club Secretary.

 

 

 

 

February 2002

The Burns Club held it`s Regular Meeting on Friday, 18th. January. The fifteen Members present were delighted that Bro. Andrew Martin, Chairman, crossed the water from Arran to chair the meeting.

Final arrangements were made for the Annual Supper on Saturday, 2nd. February.

The event is a complete sellout and Bro. Pat Clarke reports that a waiting list has been opened. The Supper has been arranged by Bro. Alex Dick, Substitute Provincial Grand Master and includes some of the most respected readers and singers in Lanarkshire. Members have been asked to contribute a prize for the Raffle, so please help the Club by making a donation. If you have a ticket, please note that the Supper will start at 6.30pm. so be there in plenty of time.

 

 

January 2002

 

Next Meeting. The next Regular Meeting of the Club will take place in the Masonic Hall, Gardenside St., Uddingston on Friday 18th. January 2002 at 8pm. to finalise the arrangements for the Annual Supper. 

 

Presentation.

Bro. Lindsay Wiggins presented the Club with a splendid decanter of special Robert Burns Whisky. 

President Bro Andrew Martin and the Members of the Club would like to thank Lindsay for his fine gift. The special edition decanter will be displayed in the Burns Club section of the display cabinet in the Temple. 

 

International Conference. 

The Burns International Conference will take place in The University of Strathclyde on 18th. and 19th. January 2002. Various experts on Burns will be lecturing and the cost is £20 per day to attend. If any member would like to attend please contact Bro. Bruce

Reidford, Secretary who has a programme and booking forms.

 

 

 

2002 Supper. Members of the Club met in the Masonic Halls on Friday, 28th. September. Arrangements were made for the 2002 Annual Supper, which will be held on Saturday 2nd. February 2002. The programme has been arranged and the principal guest will be Bro. Alex Dick, Substitute Provincial Grand Master and other members of the Hamilton Burns Club.

Tickets priced £10 will be available soon and going by previous years demand will be high.

Fees. Membership Fees £2.00 are now due and should be paid prior to uplifting Annual Supper tickets.

Office Bearers. Bro. Jim Jack has stood down as Club Secretary. He originally took over on a temporary basis in 1998 until the Club established itself both financially and in Membership. With both these objectives met the time is now right for a change. Members congratulated Bro. Jack on his efforts and wished him well with his continuing duties as P.G. Secretary. The Members then elected Bro. Bruce Reidford as Secretary and Bro. Bill Perry as Vice President. Members were delighted that Bro. Perry has accepted the position as Vice President, he is a P.M. of Lodge Robert Burns No. 440 and is the first Member of that Lodge to hold Office in the Club.

Donation. The Club donated £50 to the Burns World Federation.

 

Annual Burns Supper Report.

The Annual Supper held in the Temple on Saturday, 24th. February was another tremendous success. Bro. Andrew Martin, President, welcomed one hundred and fourteen members and friends to the Supper and they were treated to a feast of Burns works.

The Haggis was addressed by Bro. Billy Steel a P.M. of Lodge Loudoun Kilwinning No. 51 and Substitute Provincial Grand Master of Ayrshire, Bro. Ted Boult, P.M. Lodge Robert Burns No. 440 proposed the Immortal Memory which was to the highest standard.

Bro. Bob Smith, P.M. No. 51 and Hon. Member of our Burns Club gave an excellent address to Gavin Hamilton, Burns great friend and Master of Lodge Loudoun Kilwinning. After the meal the company were entertained by the tremendous production of Rantin, Rovin, Robin which presented many of the well known Burns works in an excellent stage setting.

Jane Elliot and Stephan Isaacs were accompanied by Gregor Blamey on piano and those present were delighted with their efforts. The only worry Members now have, is after the excellent Supper last year by Lodge Ludoun Kilwinning and the successful change of direction this year with Rantin`Rovin`Robin, what do we do next year?

Membership is open to any Brother who is in good standing in his Mother Lodge. Bro. Andrew Martin, Chairman invites any Brother who is interested in joining to contact Bro. Jim Jack, Secretary.

 

Annual Fees. 

The Annual Membership Fee of £2 is now due by members.
