Lodge St. Andrew Military No. 668.

In the December 2005 issue we presented an article on Bro. Alexander Ruthven, V.C. of Lodge St. Andrew Military. This prompted Bro. Peter Ball, P.M. and Bro. Archie Chalmers, P.G. D.of C. Ayrshire.

Chalmers presented a beautiful framed account of Bro. Ruthvens  career including a representation of a Victoria Cross.

This is the Second such presentation that Bro. Chalmers has made in our Province, last year he made a similar presentation to mark a Brother of Lodge Robert Burns No. 440 who had won the V.C. Interestingly of the fourteen holders of the medal who came from Lanarkshire, four have been identified as members of the Craft.

Nov 2005

A.G.M. Bro. Bruce Reidford, P.M. Treasurer presented the Lodge with an excellent balance sheet . All the Lodge Funds had  progressed well over the last year mainly due to the popularity of our Hall for functions and the tremendous Fund Raising campaign. The Lodge had over the last two year spent £12,000 in refurbishment work and this was  reflected by the first class condition of our Halls. The Brethren thanked Bro. Norrie Telfer who had been running the 50/50 club and had without doubt been an inspiration to the other Brethren by his efforts. The A.G.M. was also time to reflect on the situation three years ago when the finances were in real trouble - what an effort by our Brethren to turn this round. Everyone should be proud to be part of this achievement.

Oct 2005

P.M.`s Degree The first meeting after the recess is usually a relatively quiet meeting as the summer bowling and golfing season is still in full swing. Our Regular Meeting on 14th. September was quite well attended as the Past Masters of the Lodge conferred an  excellent M.M. Degree. Bro. Bob Edgar took over the Chair of the Lodge and with the assistance of Bros. Andrew     Nisbet, Ronnie McCarney, Andrew McAlpine, Pat Clarke, Jim Vasey, Scott Moore, Alasdair Dunlop carried out the evenings work in a very confident and capable manner.

Candidates. The Candidate situation always seems to go in cycles, long spells of inactivity and then a flurry of papers. At the moment we have two Candidates who have passed the Ballot and another paper awaiting the Enquiry         Committee.

Divine Service. Once again we are indebted to Uddingston Old Parish Church for granting permission to hold our Annual Service at the Church. The Rev. Norman McKee has been very supportive of Lodge St. Bryde over the years and the Right Worshipful Master, Bro. Alex     Hamilton requests a good attendance of members of the Lodge at this Service. Rev. McKee was recently appointed Moderator of Hamilton Presbytery and although very busy with moderatorial duties continues to support us.

Honorary Life Member. At the Regular Meeting on 14th. September Bro. Gordon Reid was presented to the Brethren of the Lodge to receive an Honorary Life Membership Certificate. The presentation of this certificate is to recognise the fact that Gordon has paid twenty one consecutive Test Fees an unfortunately, an increasingly rare event these days. Bro. Gordon was Initiated into the Lodge on 9th. Nov. 1983. His Proposer was the late Bro. Robert Frew, P.M. and his Seconder was Bro. John Summerville. Bro. Gordon held  Office  in the Lodge for many years. He first held Office as Substitute Master in 1993/4 when Bro. Iain MacLeod was R.W.M. and he also held the Office of Inner Guard from 1994 to 2000. Bro. Gordon has supported the Lodge both by attending meetings and socially and thoroughly deserves this award.

Death.

Robert Gibson

Members of the Lodge were sad to hear of the death of    Bro. Robert Gibson. Bro. Robert was Initiated on 24th.  September 1969, his Proposer being Bro. Hugh     McWhinney and his Seconder Bro. Bob Kelly.

He was a regular attender for a number of years, of quiet disposition he enjoyed the convivial nature of the Craft.

The Lodge was represented at the funeral and condolences were passed on to the family.

He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him.

Aug 2005

Cancer Research Norrie Telfer reports that the Annual Sponsored Walk on behalf of Cancer Research raised the fantastic sum of £1,800. Our Lodge members have     supported this worthwhile cause for many years and their continued support this year is greatly appreciated.

New Provincial Grand Master.

The process of selecting a new    Provincial Grand Master for our Province is now underway.

Bro. Kenneth D. Kennedy, Provincial Grand Master is due to complete his term in June 2006 and he indicated to Grand Lodge that it was not his intention to seek a second term in office as Provincial Grand Master.

Letters were subsequently sent to all 43 Lodges in the Province and Provincial Grand Lodge inviting them to recommend a Brother for the office of P.G.M.

At the Regular Meeting of Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 on 25th. May 2005 the Brethren of Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 nominated and elected Bro. James L. Jack, P.M. as their recommendation. This was the first time in the history of Lodge St. Bryde that the   Brethren of the Lodge had recommended one of their own members for the office of P.G.M.

Bro. William E. Orr, P.M. informed the Brethren of Lodge St. Bryde that Bro. Jack had, after a vote, been the recommendation that Provincial Grand Committee would make to the Regular Communication of Provincial Grand Lodge on Friday, 3rd. June 2005 in New Stevenston.

At the Regular Communication of Provincial Grand Lodge the Provincial Grand Committees recommendation was read and Bro. J. Stewart Wood, Depute Provincial Grand Master and a Past Master of Lodge Fleur de Lys No. 1722 was also nominated for the position of Provincial Grand Master. On a vote being taken Bro. James L. Jack, Provincial Grand Secretary and Past Master of Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 won the recommendation of Provincial Grand Lodge by a margin of 76 – 29.

Bro. J. Stewart Wood, Depute Provincial Grand Master graciously announced his withdrawal from the process. He thanked the Brethren who had supported him and asked them to now support Bro. James L. Jack. This leaves Bro. James L. Jack as the sole nominee for the Office of Provincial Grand Master.

History Made !

By Andrew McAlpine, P.M.

“On a personal level it is a pleasure to be able to speak about Bro. Boyd`s 50 year membership of The Lodge as I had the privilege when I was RWM in 1978 of receiving Bro. Archie Tunnock, Boyd`s father, with his 50 year Diploma. I recall on that occasion that the D. of C. was Bro. Ian Pew, a well established employee at the factory and during his presentation of his boss he was much more complimentary than usual. When he had finished I said to him “ Thank you for your presentation , worthy D.of C. you may now crawl back to your seat”. But isn`t it interesting that now we have a father and son who have completed 50 years membership of this fine Lodge. It would be a worthwhile investigation of the Lodge`s history to see if there have been any other father and sons who have achieved this distinction.

What is also most interesting is the length of time it took from Application being read to the M.M. Degree being conferred. On the 9th. Dec. 1953 the Application of Boyd Tunnock was read, the Enquiry Committee and Ballot were successful but the application had to be deferred as Boyd was doing his National Service. On 13th. April 1955 Boyd received his E.A. Degree, eighteen months later he received his F.C. Degree and finally on the 22nd. May 1957 the M.M. Degree. After National Service the family business took up much of his time, a business that catered for many a grand function here in the Hall, but Boyd, like his father before him, has been a responsible member of this Lodge since joining. The R.W.M.`s of the local Lodges have Bro. Archie to thank for their magnificent Chains of Office and this wonderful old Masonic Hall stands in all its glory thanks to the assistance of Bro. Boyd and many other of its heritable proprietors”. Bro. Bruce Reidford, P.M. Treasurer presented Bro. Boyd with his  original Diploma suitably framed. Bro. Boyd expressed his appreciation of the presentation, pledging his support to the Lodge in the future.

50/50 It seems almost hard to believe, but the total raised so far by the 50/50 Draw is nearing £15,000. Half of this figure goes directly to the Lodge and we are indebted to Bro. Norrie Telfer who has  organised this Fund raiser. We are able to use this income to further improve our premises and keep them at a very high standard. Our thanks go to Norrie for his tremendous effort in raising this sum.

Bothwell Royal Arch Chapter No. 170.  Bothwell Royal Arch Chapter No. 170 has met in our Temple since it was built in 1924, but the Chapter has been associated with Uddingston since its Charter was granted in 1877. A few years ago when the Lodge was in financial difficulty and seeking hall lets, the Chapter readily agreed to change its meeting night to accommodate the Lodge in its efforts to raise funds.  Recently attendances at the third Friday meeting of the Chapter have fallen and the Chapter was considering a move away from our Temple to re-establish its popular third Monday meeting. However, the Brethren of the Lodge voted to rearrange the Temple      calendar to accommodate the Chapter moving back to the third Monday. The Chapter will continue its association with our Temple and the village and the new Royal Arch session will start on Monday 19th. September 2005 with the A.G.M.  First Principal, David Bartleman extends a cordial invitation to all Companions to attend the meeting.

Work Party Report. Bro. Alex Hamilton, R.W.M. led an enthusiastic work party this summer. Brethren completed the following tasks, all gutters and down pipes cleaned, repairs carried out on the valley gutter, new double kitchen sink fitted, new worktops and kitchen cupboards fitted, new outside light installed dunny cleaned out and skip load of rubbish removed,  garden  tidied up, new lights fitted in main hall. The Lodge also replaced the lounge seating, (this was the major expenditure of the year) and purchased a new tall step ladder which allows the main hall roof lights to be easily changed.

Home Page News. It seems incredible that in January 2005 The Right Angle reported that the Homepage was reaching 10,000 visitors since September 1998. The figure at printing this months issue has just passed 17,500 - remarkable!  We must have one of the most popular Homepages in Scotland.

Lodge Meridian 1779.  Thursday 9th. August was indeed a special day in the history of  Lodge Meridian No. 1779 and indeed our Province.

Bro. Stephen Campbell, R.W.M. No. 1779 had invited a Deputation from various Provinces including, Perthshire West, Stirlingshire, Midlothian, Fife & Kinross and Edinburgh to carry out the M.M. Degree on one Candidate.

It seemed more like an  Installation attendance than a 1pm. meeting in August, around 85 Brethren signed the book from a variety of Lodges. The Degree was different from what we would usually see in our Province, the highlight was a M.M. Tracing Board Lecture by a P.M. from Lodge St. Andrew, St. Andrews No. 25. At the conclusion all the Degree Team received a presentation bottle of whisky which had been specially labelled for the meeting.

May 2005

Lodge Spey Report.

Bro. Alex Hamilton, R.W.M. led a Deputation of 56 Brethren to Lodge Spey No. 527, Kingussie on Saturday 16th. April 2005 to confer the F.C. Degree on one Candidate.

The meeting was supported by Bro. Bob Watt, P.G.M. of Inverness-shire, and his Depute P.G.M. and P.G. Almoner.  Bro. Bobby Abercrombie, W.S.W. headed the Degree Team and worked a superb Degree much to the delight of the large number of Brethren in attendance. The R.W.M. of Lodge Spey and the P.G.M. were delighted with the Teams efforts highlighting the fact that the Degree was much different from that worked in Inverness Province.

After the meeting all the Brethren retired to our Newtonmore Hotel where we had an excellent meal and harmony. Lodge Spey were very generous in their hospitality and every Brother attending the Dinner received a Mark Token as a gift. Bros. Alex Hamilton, R.W.M., Bro. Andrew McAlpine and Ronnie McCarney received gifts of Lodge Spey ties and 125th.  Anniversary jewels for their organisational efforts. The Brethren of Lodge Spey intimated that they would like to visit our Lodge in the future and if they do I am sure that they will be well received.

April 2005

New Member. Bro. Alex Hamilton, R.W.M. and the Brethren of the Lodge would like to take this opportunity to welcome Andrew Oattes as a new Member of our Lodge. Andrew was  Initiated on 9th. March by a Deputation from Lodge Tollcross No. 1194. Andrew is a sales consultant and lives in Coatbridge. He was Proposed by Bro. John Macleod and Seconded by Bro. Andrew McAlpine, P.M.

Presentation. A rare presentation took place at the Regular Meeting on 9th. March. The Lodge presented  50 year Diplomas to two Distinguished Past  Masters. Bro.Andrew McAlpine gave a  resume of the years of service to the Lodge given by Bro. David Gibson, P.M. (on right) and Bro. Ben Meggs, P.M. (on left)

Another Presentation. March seems to have been the month for Presentations, on the 23rd. at the Annual Visitation of Provincial Grand Lodge. The Provincial Grand Master, Bro. Kenneth D. Kennedy led a  large Deputation of Provincial Office Bearers into the Lodge and gave a very favourable report on the working of the Lodge. The P.G.M. then asked the P.G. Secretary to read the Diploma of Distinguished Service Membership which the Lodge awarded to an unsuspecting Andrew McAlpine, P.M. Secretary. To say that Bro. McAlpine was unsuspecting was the understatement of the year - he nearly fainted. The P.G.M. then invited Bro. William E. Orr, P.P.Jun. Chaplain to address the Brethren  present. Bro. Orr, who had Installed Bro. McAlpine as R.W.M. praised the work that he had done for Lodge St. Bryde in his 25 years as Lodge Secretary. Bro. McAlpine in reply thanked all those who had helped him over many years in Office

Christmas Draw. A good number of Members and Ladies attended the Lounge Night for the Annual Christmas Draw on  Saturday 18th. Dec. Bro. Alasdair Dunlop carried out the organisation in his usual efficient manner. The outcome was a great total of £560 to Lodge Funds.

New. The Lodge Lounge   carpet has been replaced with a carpet matching the new foyer pattern. This makes the decoration look even more pleasant. Twenty new lightweight tables have also purchased to replace the older heavy tables. The Lodge would like to express their sincere thanks to the Member (who wishes to remain anonymous) who donated the carpet and tables. This was a tremendous gesture.
