Dec 2001

Rosslyn Visit. The visit to Rosslyn Chapel on Saturday 3rd. November was a great success. Forty Brethren from a number of Lodges assembled at 10am at the Chapel to form part a specially arranged guided masonic tour conducted by Bro. Jim Munro, P.M. of Lodge St. Clair No. 606.

Bro. Jim Munro gave a graphic history of the Chapel and the St. Clair family and to the delight of the Brethren spent time explaining some of the less obvious features of the building. A vote of thanks was given by Bro. Jim Jack who had organised the visit and he presented Bro. Jim Munro with a gift from the assembled Brethren.

Annual Divine Service. The Right Worshipful Master and Brethren were delighted that Rev. Norman McKee conducted the Annual Divine Service on Sunday 28th. October. The Service was well attended and it was a pleasure to have Bro. Kenneth D. Kennedy, Provincial Grand Master and a large deputation from Provincial Grand Lodge present. Visitors and Brethren enjoyed tea in the Church Hall after the Service and the Lodge would like to thank the ladies who organised this.

Death.

The Lodge members who knew Bro. George Chambers will be aware of his brave battle against illness over the past few years but news of his death came as a shock and was received with sadness by the Lodge.

He was Initiated into Lodge St. Bryde in 1978, his Proposer was Bro. Hamish Stewart now resident in Canada, and he held the Offices of Organist and Jeweller during the years 1980-82. He was also Substitute Master of the Lodge when Bro. William Hall was R.W.M. in 1987. Bro. George joined Bothwell Royal Arch Chapter where he became a dedicated member for over twenty years. He was a Past Principal of the Chapter.

Many members of both organisations will remember George for his strong opinions he held and sincerely expressed from time to time and his belief that visitations to other Lodges should be reported at Lodge Meetings is a lasting legacy.

More Lodge St. Bryde News.

Bro. Hamish Stewart was back in Uddingston in the last week in October for a flying visit from Canada. He had attended a school reunion a gave the Editor a call to pass on regards to the Brethren of the Lodge via The Right Angle. He also took time to visit the late Bro. George Chambers wife and pass on his condolences.

New Member.

Luke Aaron Bromley

The Right Worshipful Master Bro. Gordon Reidford and the members of the Lodge are delighted to welcome Luke into Lodge membership. Luke was born in Chatham in 1978 and moved here almost five years ago to pursue his unusual profession as a Gunmaker. His Proposer and Seconder are Bros. Keith Martin and Andrew Martin, I.P.M. respectively. Luke is one of a growing number of new young members whose presence in our honourable fraternity has to be carefully nurtured at Lodge level.

Meet him and greet him as such.

125th. Anniversary Dance.

Around 65 Members and Friends attended the Dinner Dance to celebrate the 125th. Anniversary of the founding of our Lodge. The Dance was a fitting conclusion to a year of celebrations which have been well received by the Members of the Lodge. The Hall

was looking splendid and the meal was excellent. Members and Friends were entertained to the music of Skyline and at the stroke of midnight the company celebrated (a surprised) Andrew McAlpines sixtieth birthday.

October/November 2001

The recent appeal for articles for The Right Angle seems to have been successful. Bro. William E. Orr, P.M. recently returned from a holiday in Jersey, where he paid a visit to The Masonic Temple in St. Helier, Jersey. While there he obtained material which he hoped could be included in a future issue. . . . .Check out the new articles Early Freemasonry in Jersey and Lodge Fort William No 43

Congratulations. At the A.G.M. on 10th. October, Bro. Gordon Reidford,

Right Worshipful Master presented an Honorary Members Certificate to Bro. Alex Hamilton, P.M. The Certificate is given to Members of the Lodge who have paid twenty one consecutive years Test Fees.

Bro. Hamilton was Initiated into the Lodge on 9th. May 1979 and was Installed as R.W.M. in 1989. He was Elected by the Lodge to be our Provincial Representative in 1994 and this year was Installed into his first Provincial Office, Standard Bearer. Bro. James Jack, P.M. who Proposed Bro. Hamilton and was his Installing Master assisted the R.W.M. in the presentation.

Balance Sheet. Bro. Bruce Reidford, P.M. explained the financial position of the Lodge to the Brethren at the A.G.M. and his report was warmly received. Over the last few years the Lodge finances have steadily improved and this was mainly due to the hard work of the Brethren who are involved in the Social and Bar side of our Lodge. It is without doubt that through their efforts we are in a sound financial position.

Numbers of Candidates have also been improving this year. However, there remains a difficulty in recruiting new Office Bearers. It is obvious that there are many talented and able Brethren who sit in the Lodge who, for one reason or another do not wish to take Office. This only puts extra pressure on those who are willing to take up the challenge.

It would be a disaster if in a few years time if our Mother Lodge was to become Dormant (with a healthy Balance Sheet and superb premises) simply because we could not fill Offices and no one was willing to occupy the Chair of the Lodge.

This is a point that we will need to debate further at a later date, but every Brother who loves this Lodge should have a think about this point and read the article on commitment in the September Right Angle where a Brother who became blind took special courses at Motherwell College so that he could become Lodge Secretary.................. would you do that for your Lodge ?

Death

John Reynolds:  It was with considerable sadness that the Lodge heard of the death of Bro. John Reynolds, one of the Carmyle contingent of members that have graced our Meetings throughout much of the Lodge history.

The fact that John joined the Lodge on the 11th. February 1976, the first new member of the Centenary Year of the Lodge, was significant of the ongoing commitment to our Lodge in Uddingston from Carmyle. He enjoyed the friendship of our meetings, as his regular attendance over many years will testify, and he was particularly proud to receive Honorary Life Membership of the Lodge at the A.G.M. in 1997. His presence at our Meetings was never as regular after his illness in 1996, although his death still came as a shock to all the members who knew him.

Congratulations. Bro. Alasdair Dunlop, P.M. was Installed as First Principal of Bothwell Royal Arch Chapter No. 170 on Monday 15th. October at the Annual Installation of the Chapter held in the Temple.

Over sixty Compainions from various Chapters attended. The next meeting of the Chapter is a Special Meeting, which will be held in the Masonic Temple New Stevenson (919) on Friday 2nd. November when Bothwell Chapter will host a meeting to entertain a Deputation of Brethren from the Bahamas who are visiting Scotland.

The Installation of Office Bearers will take place on Saturday, 1st.

December 2001 at 4pm. Installing Masters, Bruce Reidford, P.M. and

James Vasey, P.M. The Deputation from the Provincial Grand Lodge of

Lanarkshire (Middle Ward) will be led by Bro. John Wood, Substitute

Provincial Grand Master.

At the A.G.M. Members of the Committee of Enquiry were also Elected,

these included James Morrell and Robin Rodgerson who have been Members

for some years.

New Hall Keeper. After recent interviews for the vacant position of Hallkeeper, the Lodge has appointed Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell of Bothwell.

It is believed that Mrs. Campbell is the first woman to be our Hallkeeper.

We wish Mrs. Campbell well in her new post and hope that she receives the full support of the members and other organisations which use our Temple.

Visitation

Lodge St. Andrew No. 573. The visit of Lodge St. Andrew No. 573 to our Lodge on Wednesday 12th. September 2001 will be a historic event in the history of both Lodges.

The Right Worshipful Master of Lodge St. Andrew, Bro. Douglas Learmouth will lead the Deputation to his Mother Lodge, St. Bryde and confer the E.A. Degree. Bro. Douglas affiliated to 573 after moving house to Motherwell and gradually worked through the offices of the Lodge, being Installed as R.W.M. last year. He invited Lodge St. Bryde to visit 573 soon after his Installation and at the conclusion of the meeting conferred Honorary Membership of the Lodge on Bro. Gordon Reidford our Right Worshipful Master.

Bro. Reidford joins Bro. James L. Jack, P.M. as the only Members of Lodge St. Bryde to hold such an Honour.

Deaths.

The Lodge suffered greatly during the summer recess with the untimely deaths of three members.

Hugh Murphy, Past Master. died 2nd. May 2001.

The news of the sudden death of Bro. Hugh Murphy, P.M. at his home was received with sadness by the Lodge members, especially those who knew him and remembered his work for the Lodge. He was Initiated into the Lodge in 1953 and eventually progressed through Office to become R.W.M. for the year 1972. It was Hugh who began the Right Angle magazine in 1970, bringing it from a one page newsletter to a magazine format that was printed in Erskine Homes. His editorial skills in those early editions was inspirational to the long run of the popular, present day magazine. The condolences of the Lodge were extended to his wife Christine

Ronnie Wilson. died 19th. May 2001.

The local communities of Bothwell & Uddingston, the staff at Tunnock`s and the Members of the Lodge were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death, whilst driving his car, of such a popular character.

Bro. Ronnie was Initiated into the Lodge in 1979 and he supported the Lodge whenever his work as a long distance H.G.V. Driver allowed. He loved the annual weekend visits and spoke fondly of great times spent at Tain, Portree, Inverness and Fortrose.

Due tribute was paid to his memory at the last meeting before the recess and a very large attendance of Lodge Members at his funeral service.

Condolences were extended to his wife Isobel.

Bro. Alan R. Stoddart, Past Master died 20th. June 2001.

During the summer recess, and with some members being on holiday, the news of the death of Bro. Alan Stoddart, P.M. was received with sorrow and sympathy. Bro. Alan was Initiated into the Lodge in 1940 at the age of eighteen years and as one of its youngest Initiates, the Lodge showed a concerned interest in him while serving his country during the Second World War.

He became actively involved in the work of the Lodge in the 1960`s and 1970`s particularly as R.W.M. for the year 1973 and he was proud to receive his 50 year Diploma at the 28th. February 1990 Meeting.

Both he and his wife enjoyed being back in the Masonic Hall for the 125th. Anniversary Concert on the 5th. May.

The Lodge was represented at his funeral and a letter of sympathy sent to his wife.

New Member.

Fraser Sharp Simpson

The Right Worshipful Master, Bro. Gordon Reidford and the Members of the Lodge are delighted to welcome Fraser into Lodge Membership.

Fraser is a Civil Engineer and lives in Bothwell. He was Initiated on 9th. May 2001 and his Proposer and Seconder are Bros. Colin McCarney and Paul Hamilton respectively and all three have been good friends since Primary School days. Long may their friendship continue to flourish in our Lodge.

Presentation.

At the last Regular Meeting prior to the recess the R.W.M. Bro. Gordon Reidford presented Bro. William E. Orr, P.M. with a jewel on behalf of the Lodge to mark the end of his Commission as Provincial Grand Junior Chaplain.

Bro. Orr progressed through the various Provincial Offices to reach the Senior Wardens chair in 1994 and received further Honours when in 2000, the Grand Master Mason conferred on him the rank of Hon. Grand Junior Deacon.

Bro. Orr was almost struck speechless by the surprise of the presentation, but quickly recovered to take a few moments to thank the Brethren of the Lodge for their generosity.

Congratulations.

Bro. William Perry, P.M. , Secretary of Lodge Robert Burns No. 440 was admitted into The Royal Order of Scotland on 4th. June 2001.

The Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow and West of Scotland of the Order meet in the Trades House of Glasgow. We in Lodge St. Bryde are delighted that Bro. Bill has been invited to join and offer our congratulations.

Good Luck.

Bro. Andrew Martin, I.P.M. recently took up a new job on the Isle of Arran and has moved house to the Isle. He will be sadly missed as he was a regular attender at Lodge, Provincial Grand Lodge and Grand Lodge meetings. We in Lodge St. Bryde would like to wish Andrew well in his new position and hope that he will visit the Lodge when he can.

Homepage.

The Homepage continues to attract visitors from both home and abroad. The visitors book, which can be viewed, contains entries from all over the world. The numbers of visitors since the site was first opened on 14th. June 1998 has passed the 2500 mark. Visit your Lodge Website at, http://www.stbryde.co.uk

Lodge St. Enoch No. 1288 Special Meeting

R.W.M. Bro. David Curtis and the Brethren of Lodge St. Enoch would cordially invite Brethren to a Special Meeting in The Masonic Hall, Uddingston on Wednesday, 31st. October at 7.30pm. when the Lodge will work a M.M. Degree.

The Lodge will welcome visitors from Lodge St. David No. 1741, Nassau, Bahamas who are touring Scotland. All visitors are welcome and a Harmony will follow the meeting.

Work Party News.

Whenever the summer recess comes around and the Work Part Wednesdays begin, I think of the words "that you must not look upon labour for your Lodge as a toil but as a pleasure". As heritable proprietors of such a magnificent Masonic Hall it is incumbent on all of us, not just the Master, to honour the building of it by maintaining it to its fullest splendour. A small but dedicated number of Brethren worked extremely hard during the recess keeping the Lodge premises in good order.

In light of the fact that we will be having new neighbours in the two blocks of Flats built on the adjoining property it was felt necessary to have dialogue with the builders to ensure that proper boundaries were observed and that the retaining walls were strong enough along the eastern boundary in particular. Negotiations were not easy and nine weeks have passed without an agreement being reached with MCA Homes.

This year the work party concentrated in clearing much of the undergrowth and rubbish which had accumulated around the East and North sides. Firstly before the rubble and rubbish could be moved years of bramble growth had to be cut down, so that we could get in! Along the North side more undergrowth was cleared away and much of the tree branches which were overhanging the roof were cut back.

Without doubt the R.W.M. of our Lodge who conferred Honorary Membership on Alex Hannah should be congratulated. What an asset Bro. Alex has been to our Lodge.

This year he continued pointing the West wall, cleared and cleaned all the gutters and checked the roof. He then cleaned and pointed most of the front of the building. A great effort.

The floor in the adjacent apartment was cleaned and polished by the S.M. who took two buses from his home to do this work, and a fridge and chiller unit was acquired by an enterprising Office Bearer who smokes big cigars!

Congratulations.

Bro. Ronnie McCarney, P.M. received a letter from Grand Secretary informing him that he had been promoted to Proxy Senior Warden of his Proxy Lodge, Lodge Badagry Creek No. 1796, Lagos, Nigeria. Bro. Ronnie has been a regular attendee at Grand Lodge Quarterly Communications and has served as Proxy Junior Warden for a number of years.

Test Fees are now due to be paid to the Lodge. For the small sum of £15 you are "clear in the books". Basically this means that you can speak on any matter in the Lodge, propose someone into our Craft, take Office in the Lodge and visit other Lodges. You are "part owner" of the Temple and have the right to use the Lounge facilities when they are open or request the use of the premises for a private function.

This is YOUR LODGE and for the price of £15 you can be, Clear for a Year

Rosslyn Chapel Visit.

Recently our Lodge adopted the Grand Lodge Ad-Hoc Committee recommendation that Masonic Education must be given a higher profile. Over the last six years we have brought various topics of interest to you via the pages of The Right Angle and have been enthusiastic in pursuing features

such as Open Days, Lectures and Tours.

Rosslyn Chapel is one of the most remarkable churches in existence and was founded in 1446 by William St. Clair, Prince of Orkney. The St. Clair`s have for centuries held a special place in Scottish Masonic history and Rosslyn Chapel is without doubt a place of great Masonic symbolism.

Bro. Jim Munro, P.M. of Lodge St. Clair No. 606 and an expert on the Chapel, has again agreed to conduct a Masonic tour for our Brethren.

The date will be Saturday, 3rd. November 2001. Brethren will make their own travel arrangements and meet at Rosslyn Chapel at 10am.

The Lecture and Tour will take about two hours. The cost of entry to the Chapel is £4.00p. Brethren who would like to attend please put their names on the notice board so that arrangements can be made.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Scottish Masonic History and should not be missed.

Lodge Almoner.

The Almoner is the link between the active Membership and those who, through illness or misfortune, cannot attend the Lodge, or who find themselves in reduced circumstances. Four Papers.

After a spell with no Candidates in the pipeline, suddenly the Lodge received four applications for Membership. The Papers were read at the Regular Meeting on Wednesday 11th. April and the applicants will come before the Enquiry Committee in due course.

Work Party.

During the summer months the annual work party will be convened on Wednesday throughout June, July and August. This particular work party will be of some significance to the heritable property belonging to our worthy Lodge, not only because of it`s 125th. Anniversary Year but also because of the building of two blocks of flats on the adjacent land. Steps will be taken to ensure that our east and north boundaries are maintained, that we do not suffer any land slippage or damage to boundary walls and that we know our rights.

The garden area and surrounding paths will have to be kept to an acceptable standard.

The good work of our Honorary Member in making the building water tight has to be continued. With this in mind the damage to one of the roof beams has to be rectified.

Repairs have to be carried out on the Lodge furniture and the storage area under the stage has to be padded to avoid further damage to the historic Lodge furniture.

Consideration has to be given to the siting of a smoke expelair in the Lounge area.

Dainage will be such that all pipes will lead into Gardenside St. and Station Road, no drainage will enter our property. Access will be from Station Rd. only. Brethren of the Lodge will be aware that work has started on the building of twelve houses on the waste ground which borders the Temple on two sides. The ground has been in a derelict state since the former garage was demolished and the Brethren of the Lodge have asked for a meeting with the Developer to discuss various aspects of the work. The meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday 7th. March and a report will appear in the April issue of The Right Angle.
