Lodge St. Bryde means to me. At the Regular Meeting of our Lodge on Wednesday 13th. November a to
be hand made from tin and had well worked designs, which at first glance looked
as if they were engraved, but were infact scribed. They were from two Gardeners
Lodges, "Hawthorn", Greengairs and "Thistle", Motherwell
which it is believed fell dormant around the early 1930`s. The
jewels were taken to Bob Cooper, the Curator of the Grand Lodge (see
centre pages of this issue) The discovery of these jewels coincided with the revival of the Order of Free Gardeners in Scotland. The Order although similar to Freemasonry is not connected. In May 2002 the interest in the "new" Order was such that three Gardeners on holiday in Scotland from South Africa and Australia (where Gardeners Lodges were still in existence) were invited to revive the Order in Scotland, where it originated.

WORK PARTY On Wednesdays during the summer months of June, July & August the
annual Lodge work party will be convened. The work in maintaining our Lodge
property is vital for the long term future of the building. This year the gardens will require attention and we will be taking time
to clear the north side of the building now that the housing development is
complete. The Lodge furniture will require repairs, especially the Master and
Wardens chairs. We will also need to inspect and repair all the tables and
chairs as some are beginning to look the worse for wear.
Oh! nearly forgot - the dangling light! we must fix it. Any Brother who is willing to help with the above work, please contact the R.W.M.
Fort William Visit by Alasdair Dunlop, W.S.W. At around 8.55 am a fine deputation of Brethren from 579 and our Sister Lodges set out for Fort William with the usual banter and high spirits and of course the annual quiz and raffle. This year we raised £150 which
put to offset the expences of buying the gifts for No. 43. The winner of the
quiz this year being Bro. Robin Rogerson. Arriving around noon we were welcomed
by the advance party of Jim McLennan, Ian Dick, John McKee & John Manderson.
We were made most welcome by members of No. 43 who had provided lunch and
refreshments, we were then taken on a tour of their beautiful Temple. The main
feature is the splendid Masonic tapestry which hangs in the East and is over 150
years old. We then took the bus to the Cruachan Hotel where we were to stay. Returning to the Lodge about 6pm. we entered in procession and were presented to the the Brethren of Lodge Fort William and the Provincial
Grand Master of Inverness shire. The P.G.M. of Inverness welcomed the deputation
to Fort William, Bro. Alex Hamilton, P.G. Marshall replied on behalf of The
P.G.M. of Lanarkshire. Bro. Andrew Reidford, R.W.M. introduced the degree team for the evening,
Alasdair Dunlop, Receiving, Andrew Reidford, Obligation, Alan Murphy, P.M. 1126,
Signs & Secrets, Robert Kennedy, P.M. 440, Apron & Tools, Robert Abercrombie, N.E. Corner, David Kelly, P.M. 1126 Charge. At the conclusion of the degree the team were warmly thanked by all
present. R.W.M. Bro. Andrew Reidford, presented an engraved S & C and an apron
signed by all the deputation. The Brethren from Lodge Fort William presented
Lodge St. Bryde with a plaque with the No. 43 coat of arms and a Lodge history
book. On the return trip a large bottle of whisky was raffled raising the sum
of £88 which was presented to the R.W.M. of Lodge Ben Ledi in Callander who
provided us with lunch on our stopover. Oh, the bottle of whisky - that was won
by Ronnie McCarney.
Mark Degree. Bro. Scott Weir was Initiated into the Lodge on the
11th. September 1996 but, being away from home as a member of H.M. Forces, could
not be present for his Mark Degree. However, this was eventually rectified on
10th. April 2002 when Lodge Livingstone No. 599, in their 125th. Anniversary
year, conferred this Degree on him during an excellent ceremony. Bro. Scott duly appreciated receiving this Honourable Degree and his
father, Bro. Donnie Weir was happily present to witness our newest Mark Master
as the sole Candidate. Twenty`s Plenty. The Twenty`s Plenty Fund Raiser which was launched in February, has
really taken off. At the Regular Meeting on 11th. April, the Brethren handed in
eight tubes with a total of £148 inside and again on 24th. Five tubes with £126.
This takes the total so far raised to just over £400 nearly half of our target total. For those who don`t know how the scheme works; -
firstly, see the Lodge Treasurer who will gladly give you a tube of
Smarties. -
Next, eat the Smarties, then fill the empty tube with 20p pieces. A
Smartie tube will take £15 in 20p`s. (some Brethren have even been putting £1
coins in ) -
When the tube is full give it back to the Treasurer who will put you on
the list for a special prize draw if we reach £1000 by February 2003. Note.
Make sure that you get a Smartie tube to fill during the recess. Provincial Visit. The Lodge were delighted when Bro. Alex Dick, Substitute Provincial Grand Master led a Deputation from Provincial Grand Lodge into the Lodge on the Annual Visitation on 22nd. March. Included in the Deputation were Lodge St. Bryde Brethren, Bros. William E. Orr, Past Provincial Grand Junior Chaplain, Alex Hamilton, Provincial Grand Marshall and Ronnie McCarney, Provincial Grand Tyler. Also in attendance was Bro. Bruce Reidford, Provincial Auditor - all Past Masters of Lodge St. Bryde. Bro. Alex Dick gave the Lodge a good report for the year and congratulated Bro. Gordon Reidford, I.P.M. for leading the Lodge in such an excellent manner. Bro. Gordon Reidford who was standing in for the R.W.M. on that evening made suitable reply.
Bahamas Visit. In March my wife and I (writes Bro Jim Jack PM) visited New Providence
Island on holiday (to celebrate my Jubilee - no jewel will be struck). Prior to
the holiday, I met Tommy Bryce, P.M. of Lodge St. Enoch No. 1288 who was going
out to visit (for two months) his Daughter and Son in Law who live and work in
Nassau. Several Scottish Lodges meet in Nassau and most of the Brethren who
visited Lodge St. Enoch in October 2001 came from New Providence. A new Preceptory (Rising Sun of Nassau) was due to be Consecrated the day
after we arrived and Tommy was arranging for the Founder Members jewels to be
made here, but unfortunately they were not ready when he left and he asked me to
chase them up and bring them with me. After many phone calls to suppliers the
jewels were finally in my hands hours before we left. We arrived in Nassau on Wednesday evening and phoned Tommy to let him
know we had arrived and that we had the jewels with us. Next morning we met
Tommy and Jullian the District Grand Secretary who were delighted with the
Founders jewel. The meeting was that evening and although I was invited to attend, I
declined, but did go down to see some well kent faces from The Grand Priory of
Scotland who were staying in the next hotel. Roy Scott was heading the
Deputation and also present were David Niven from our Provincial Committee and
Sam Warden, who was the R.W.M. of No. 6 in Inverness when we visited during
Scott Moore`s year. In all about
ten Brethren from Scotland flew in from Jamaica on Thursday mid day, Consecrated the Preceptory in the evening and flew back to
Jamaica next day to carry out an Installation before flying home to Scotland. Bro. Idris Reid, The District Grand Master phoned the hotel to invite
Helen and I to a reception in the Bahamas National Trust Buildings in honour of
the new District Grand Master of the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands on the
following Saturday. We were well received at the reception and met many of the
Brethren who had visited our Temple with St. Enoch last October. Visitors included the District Grand Masters of Scottish, English and
Irish Constitutions from Jamaica, Canada, Barbados and the Bahamas as well as a
Deputation from Canada. The Installation of Bro. James R. Bain could not have been better
organised, a Saturday afternoon - Helen went to the beach, I went with Tommy to
the meeting, which by chance was in the Hotel that we were staying in!
Bro. Idris Reid, District Grand Master headed a tremendous Deputation of
around fifty of his Brethren from The Bahamas into the Installation. I was given
the Honour of immediately preceding the District Grand Master and The Immediate
Past District Grand Master in the procession (something to do with Grand
Committee, I think). The Installation was carried out in the typical English
manner, very dignified and very “regular”. Bro. Reid spoke on behalf of the Scottish Brethren at the end of the
meeting and mentioned his visit to Lodge St. Enoch last year and how much he had
enjoyed the warmth of the hospitality which was extended to him, I can reassure
the Brethren from “up the hill” that if they manage to get to the Bahamas in
2004 as planned, they are in for a great time.
APRIL Seven long years. It doesn`t seem like it, but this months issue of The
Right Angle (Issue 64) is the seventh anniversary of it`s launch in it`s present
form. In April 1995 we took up the initiative of the Grand Lodge Ad Hoc
Committee and tried to provide a means of improving communication with our Lodge
Brethren. Thirty copies of the April 1995 issue were printed - and it soon
became evident that there was a hunger for news of Grand Lodge, Provincial Grand
Lodge and local Lodge news as well as interesting articles on Masonic topics of
interest. Production increased and now varies between 100 and 150 copies per month.
Interesting to note that in this first issue a new Member, Gordon Reidford was
welcomed into the Lodge, the death of Bro. Captain Robert Wolridge Gordon of
Esslemont, Past Grand Master was intimated. He led the Deputation from Grand Lodge to our Centenary Meeting in 1976.
Articles of Masonic interest included, Prince Hall Freemasonry and Masonic
Tokens in the Display Cabinet.
There was also The Back
Page, which was a look at topics of interest but "from not quite The Right Angle". Looking back it has
provided a light-hearted look at Lodge life and uncovered some real characters
in the process. Education Committee. The Lodge Education Committee met for the first time on Wednesday 6th.
March. The Committee comprises of four experienced
Past Masters of the Lodge, Jim Vasey (Chairman), Andrew McAlpine, Pat Clarke and
Jim Jack. They were given a wide ranging remit which looked at all aspects of
masonic education in our Lodge. The meeting was very focused on the task in hand some excellent ideas
were put forward for implementation. Firstly, a formal instruction class is to
be arranged for every second month (starting Wed. 1st. May) and more frequent if
desired. The format would be that the class would start at 7.30 and finish at 9
pm. It would be split into three half hour sessions. All Initiates admitted this
term (Sept. 01 to present) would receive a personal letter of invitation to the
session 7.30 to 8pm. This session would consist of a short lecture on the
history of our Scottish Craft and how it evolved over centuries. The group would
then concentrate on rehearsing grips, signs & secrets of their various
degrees and topics eg. How to prove themselves as a visitor to another Lodge.
This format means that the night will not drag on into the small hours and will
target specific topics. Enough thought had been put into the meeting that the structure of future
meetings was also discussed and these would be announced after the committee
reviewed the first meeting. The Committee also discussed future Candidates and
the important part that Education must play in their development. This is too
good an opportunity for anyone with the future of our Lodge at heart to miss. If
you are a new member (or an old one) in need of explanation, brushing up on
degree work, signs & secrets or your part as an Office Bearer of the Lodge
then take the opportunity being given by these Past Masters who are willing to
help you better understand the organisation of which you are a valuable part. Congratulations. Bothwell Royal Arch Chapter No. 170 celebrated their 125th. Anniversary
on Friday 8th. March 2002 in our Temple. Bro. Alasdair Dunlop, M.E.Z. welcomed
over one hundred Brethren to the Re dedication ceremony which was conducted by
Bro. Peter Greenan, Grand Superintendent of Lanarkshire. The Charter was granted on 7th. March 1877 with M.E.Z. Thomas Simpson
Short presiding. After a spell of some 5 years the Chapter ran into some
problems and this resulted in the Chapter becoming dormant between 1882 and
1913, a period of 31 years. On Wednesday 17th. September 1913 a Ceremonial was held within the Public
Halls, Uddingston on the occasion of the Reponal of Bothwell Chapter No. 170.
The Ceremonial was carried out by M.E.C. Col. P. Spence, Depute Grand
Superintendent. Interesting to note that a certain Bro. James Patrick, who had
been a Founder Member of the Chapter in 1877 was Installed as an Office Bearer
when the Chapter was Reponed in 1913. Bothwell is the second oldest Chapter in Lanarkshire Middle Ward and was a Founding Chapter of Provincial Grand Chapter. We in Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 would like to extend our congratulations to the Chapter and wish them well in the future.
The SMARTIE tube Tweny`s plenty fund raiser has got of to a flyer! Over
thirty Brethren have taken tubes to fill with 20 pence pieces. So we should be well on out way to our target of £1000. Keep up the good
work. New Member. Charles Morrow Mulholland. Right Worshipful Master Bro. Andrew Reidford and Members of the Lodge are
delighted to welcome Charles into Lodge membership. Charles was born and brought
up in Uddingston and is a 27 year old Customer Service Advisor. His Proposer and
Seconder are Bros. Duncan Mulholland, J.D. and Gordon Reidford, I.P.M.
respectively. Charles is the younger Brother of Duncan and the son of regular
visitor Bro. Charles Mulholland Snr. He is a growing number of new young members
whose presence in our honourable fraternity has to be carefully nurtured at
Lodge level. Meet him and greet him as such.
The Right Angle by Andrew
McAlpine, P.M., Secretary. The Lodge can celebrate with great pride the seventh anniversary of The
Right Angle in its present format. Not only has it been consistent in meeting
its nine monthly deadlines every year and maintaining its information
excellence, but it has also earned a growing readership who have been educated
by the articles of masonic interest and have laughed at the antics of The Back
Page characters. As in every celebration there is much to be thankful for the
contributors of articles over the years, the characters who enrich the life of a
Lodge, the printing assistance given by Mrs . Irene Bryson and the loyal readers who eagerly await the next edition - but we have to be more than thankful to the
Editor of The Right Angle, Bro. James L. Jack, P.M. for the many, many hours of
hard work and research he has given to this monthly magazine over these past
seven years. What other Lodge has been so active in this modern world of communications than Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 ?
March
Fort William visit. Plans are well
in hand for the Deputation to Lodge Fort William No. 43 on Saturday 20th. April
2002. Rooms have been booked in the Cruachan Hotel, Fort William which is a
short walk from the Lodge. It is expected that the bus will be fully booked for
the visit, so if you would like to go, contact Ronnie McCarney, P.M. . The deposit is £20, the total cost
of the trip is £35 and the balance must be paid by Wednesday, 27th. March.
Lectures. At the Regular Meeting of
the Lodge on Wed. 13th. February 2002 Bro. Jim Vasey, P.M. gave an excellent
Lecture on the life and music of Mozart. He covered a wide range of his music
and explained the love he had for our Craft and how this was reflected in his
Masonic Music. At the conclusion the Brethren gave a hearty vote of thanks to
Bro. Jim. for his efforts. On Monday 11th. February four of our
members visited Lodge Montefiore No. 753 in Glasgow where Bro. Jim Jack, P.M.
gave a Mark Token Lecture. The meeting was held in Garnethill
Synagogue and was attended by the Provincial Grand Master of Glasgow and a
Deputation of P.G.L. Office Bearers. The members of Lodge St. Bryde were well
received and at the conclusion the R.W.M. of Lodge Montefiore congratulated Bro.
Jack on his efforts. Education Committee. At the last
Lodge Committee Meeting the subject of the new Grand Lodge Education Committee
was discussed. The members of the Committee were enthusiastic that there could
be great benefits to our younger members in Masonic Education if the Grand
Committee was a success. It was decided that our Lodge could benefit from having
a similar Education Committee which would look at all aspects of Masonic
Education, including Ritual Working and be in a position to assist Grand
Committee with our Lodges views. It was agreed that a small Committee be formed to look at all aspects of Masonic Education within our Lodge. The Committee will consist of Andrew McAlpine, P.M. , Jim Vasey, P.M., Pat Clark, P.M., and Jim Jack, P.M. there will be no ex-officio members of the Committee which will report to the next meeting of the Lodge Committee.
Congratulations. Bro. Robert Geater,
Past Master celebrated his 90th. birthday on 4th. February 2002. Bob was Right
Worshipful Master in 1960 and still takes great interest in the Lodge news. The
R.W.M. and Brethren of the Lodge offer our congratulations and wish him well. Education Committee. Bro. George R. Kelly, Immediate Past
Provincial Grand Master attended the Regular Meeting on 13th. February. He has
been elected to the Grand Lodge Education Committee and was invited by our R.W.M.
to give his thoughts on the formation of this new Committee in Grand Lodge and
in our Lodge. Bro. Kelly outlined the objectives and functions of the new
committees and hoped that they would be successful.
Twenty`s Plenty. The new Fund
Raising initiative got off to a great start at the 12th. February meeting. Bro.
Jim Jack explained that he had purchased tubes of smarties which would be given
out to Brethren wishing to take part in the scheme. The object is to give the
smarties to the kids then fill the empty tube with twenty pence pieces and
return them to the Treasurer. It is possible to get £15 worth of 20p`s in a
tube. It is hoped that we can raise £1000 for Lodge Funds over the next twelve
months. The progress of the Fund Raising will be kept on The Back
Page of The Right Angle New Member. David Ferguson Shaw The Right Worshipful Master Bro.
Andrew Reidford and the members of the Lodge are delighted to welcome David into
Lodge membership. David was born in Tannochside in 1960 and has been resident in
the area all his life. He works as a H.G.V. mechanic. His Proposer and Seconder
were David McIntosh and Duncan Mulholland respectively. We look forward to
meeting with him in the future.
February 2002
Visit to No 43. Final arrangements have now been made for the visit to Lodge Fort William No. 43 on Saturday, 20th. April 2002. Rooms have been booked in the Cruachan Hotel, Fort William which is only a short walk from the Lodge. The bus will leave from the Hall, Gardenside St., at 8.45 am. on Sat. 20th. and return to Uddingston on Sunday afternoon. The total cost of the trip is £35. A deposit of £20 should be paid to Bro. Ronnie McCarney, P.M. as soon as possible and the balance must be paid by: Wednesday 27th. March 2002.
Honorary Life Membership Bro. Alan Mason, was Initiated into the Lodge on the 23rd. January 1980 and paid his Test Fee for the following twenty one consecutive years. He made a significant contribution to the Lodge during the decade of the 1980`s - as a prolific Degree worker and as an Office Bearer in nine different Offices. When he was Installed as R.W.M. on 25th. November 1989 he became the fourth member of the Mason family to occupy the Chair of the Lodge, the only time in the history of the Lodge that has been achieved. At the time of his Installation he was also the youngest Master in the history of the Lodge. The only sadness was that his father, the late Bro. Jim Mason, P.M. was not there to see his son being Installed by Bros. Andrew Mason, P.M. and George Mason, P.M. . Alan`s work commitments of late have prevented him from attending the Lodge as much as he would wish.
Death The sad news of the sudden death of Bro. Harry Creaney came as a shock to his many friends in the Lodge. Harry was Initiated on the 8th. February 1967 with good friends Bro. Ron McCarney and Bro. Scott Moore being his Proposer and Seconder at the time. He was a regular member of the Enquiry Committee for a number of years, an Honorary Life Member and was a regular attender at Lodge meetings until he moved from Uddingston to live in Airdrie ten years ago. His good company was enjoyed at many Lodge social nights and he continued this association from time to time despite the travel involved. Tributes were paid to his memory at a recent Ldge meeting and a good number of Brethren were in attendance at the funeral service.
Paperweights. Bro. Alasdair Dunlop, W.S.W. presented two splendid Masonic paperweights to the Lodge Display Cabinets. They are in a blue glass finish, similar to the decanter which Alasdair previously presented.
January 2002
Honorary Life Membership. At the Regular Meeting of the Lodge on Wednesday 28th. November 2001, Bro. Gordon Reidford, Right Worshipful Master presented Bro. David Dawson, Past Master with his Honorary Life Membership Certificate. Bro. David was Initiated in 1978 and had made 21 consecutive payments of his Test Fees, thus entitling him to this Honour. He first took Office as 4th. Steward at the Installation of 1978 and spent a further seven years progressing through the various Offices before becoming Right Worshipful Master for the year 1988. His work commitments since then have meant that he had to travel and to work away, but he always attended either masonically or socially whenever he was at home. David is the Lodge Webmaster and his great work in establishing the Lodge Website and keeping it updated has proved to be a great success story for the Lodge.
Installation. Just under one hundred Brethren attended the Installation of Office Bearers on Saturday 1st. December 2001. Bros. Bruce Reidford, P.M. and Jim Vasey, P.M. conducted the ceremonial in an excellent manner much to the delight of the assembled Brethren. The new Right Worshipful Master, Bro. Andrew Reidford was Installed into the chair by Bro. Bruce and became the third member of the Reidford family to occupy the Chair of our Lodge. This is not quite true, Bro. Jim Vasey, P.M. after Installing Bro. Andrew Reidford (Senior) as Substitute Master invited him to take the Chair of the Lodge until the Installing Board returned. Bro. Andrew Reidford, R.W.M. now duly Installed, chaired the Installation Dinner. The toasts were of a very high standard and the Brethren responded in traditional fashion. Bro. Bob Edgar, W.J.W. conducted the Harmony and the order from the company was testimony to the artists talents. Bro. John Wood, Substitute Provincial Grand Master on retiring paid tribute to the Installing Masters and the assembled Brethren for an excellent Installation and harmony. Brethren were upstanding and sang the traditional "will ye no come back again" to which the Provincial Deputation made suitable reply.
Deaths Frank McBride Bro. Frank McBride died at the relatively young age of fifty five years. He was proposed for membership of the Lodge by his good friend Bro. Jim Morrell and was Initiated in 1993. A friendship that had developed when both of them worked as Trade Union officials. Bro. Frank had a caring nature and was genuinely interested in his fellow Brethren. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him.
Tom Morris Bro. Tom Morris was a Life Member of the Lodge who had died in England at the age of eighty two years. He had been Initiated in 1952 when he lived in Uddingston but had moved to England to take up employment as a Prison Officer. His interest in Freemasonry continued and he was latterly a regular visitor to the Gloucester Lodge of Agriculture (E.C.)
Ernie Holding Bro. Enrie Holding was Initiated into the Lodge in 1955. He was a familiar figure in Uddingston who lived in Watson Street and was a Bar Chargehand in one of the local pubs. This work prevented him from attending many meetings although he did attend when his son Robert joined the Lodge during the Centenary Year of 1976. Ernie had a great sense of humour and was a great character who will be sadly missed.
Jewel returns. Bro. Ben Meggs, P.M. presented the Lodge with the late Bro. Duncan Buchan`s Past Masters apron and Jewel. Bro. Duncan was Right Worshipful Master in 1968 and was a great worker for the Lodge. He was well respected and is fondly remembered by those who knew him.
Christmas Draw. The Christmas Draw was made on Wednesday 19th. December 2001. Bro. Alasdair Dunlop, W.S.W. again organised the draw which raised the total of £670 for Lodge funds. Many of the prizes were donated and the top prize of a portable colour T.V. was won by Bro. Ian Dick. The Right Worshipful Master Bro Andrew Reidford and the Brethren of the Lodge would like to thank Bro. Alasdair for his hard work in making this event such a success.
Tours Exhibition. The Masonic Exhibition in Tours, France between 15th. June and 8th. September 2002 has now put it`s Catalogue up for sale. The Catalogue is itself a Masonic collectors item and contains over 320 pages, 300 photos and explanatory notices and contains articles by well known experts. The Catalogue costs 38 Euros (including postage), any Brother interested in purchasing one should contact Jim Jack, P.M. jljack@stbryde.co.uk who will advise on how to order. Thinking of going? The exhibition is without doubt, not to be missed by the Masonic student. Exhibits have been assembled from the Museums of The Grand Lodges of Norway, France, Sweden, Scotland, Switzerland, Brazil, Germany, Belgium, England and many others. If you are interested in going to Tours contact Jim Jack, P.M. and perhaps arrangements could be looked into.
