The Quiz Night held on Friday, 10th.
October was a great success. The event raised £131 and it was decided by those
who attended the event to contribute the sum to the Provincial Grand Lodge, St.
Andrew`s Hospice Appeal. Total. Previous Fund Raisers contributed £525, Stuart
Jack raised £125 (credited to 579) making the total contribution from Lodge St.
Bryde to the St. Andrew`s Hospice Appeal - £656. This was a tremendous effort
and all those who organised events, took part in fund raisers and helped in any
way can take great satisfaction from the fact that we were able to contribute
such a sum. Installation
of Office Bearers. Installing Masters Bros. Bruce Reidford, P.M. and James Vasey, P.M. were in tremendous form at the Installation on 25th. November. It was an emotional occasion as Bro. Bruce installed his son, Gordon into the Chair of the Lodge in such an able manner. Bro. Jim Vasey, P.M. installed the remainder of the Office Bearers in his usual excellent manner. To round off the evening, and to complete the family connection Bro. Gordon Reidford, R.W.M.`s uncle Andrew was installed as W.S.W. and Bro. Andrew Reidford, Senior was installed as Substitute Master. Bro. James Shanks, Substitute Provincial Grand Master led a large Provincial Deputation which included, James L. Jack, P. G. Secretary, William E. Orr, P.G. Jun. Chaplain, Ronald McCarney, P.G. Tyler and Alex. L. Hamilton, P.G. Committee all Past Masters of Lodge St. Bryde. Oldest
Past Masters Jewel returns. It was in 1885 that the Lodge
recognised the service given by the P.M.`s and at a Special Meeting held on the
3rd. December 1885, P.M.`s jewels were presented to Bros. John Baird (RWM
1879-80) and James Patrick(RWM 1884-5). This is the first record of P.M.`s
jewels in the history of the Lodge. This landmark in Lodge History was
brought into in 1993 when a surprise packet dropped through the letterbox of the
Lodge Secretary. It was sent by James Riley of London and enclosed within was
his Grandfather`s Past Masters jewel in it`s original case. Research showed that
his Grandfather was Bro. James Riley who was R.W.M. of the Lodge for the years
1888-89. It was therefore the oldest Past Masters jewel in the possession of the
Lodge. Further research gave assurance of
its significance - on the 24th. November 1887 the new Lodge Room in the Royal
Buildings was Consecrated by Col. J.Clark Forrest, Provincial Grand Master, and
thereafter the ceremony of installation took place. The new R.W.M. was Bro.
James Riley of Brooklands who went on to serve two years in the Chair of the
Lodge. As a special celebration a dinner was held in the Royal Hotel on the
24th. January 1888 with R.W.M. Bro. James Riley as Chairman. Since 1993 the
jewel has been in the safe custody of the Lodge Secretary, but it can now be
seen in the display cabinet. The Almoner is the link between the
active Membership and those who, through illness or misfortune, cannot attend
the Lodge; or who find themselves in reduced circumstances. Through his contact
with those who are sick, or bereaved, or have suffered other misfortunes, the
Almoner brings their cases to the notice of the Lodge and arrangements for the
necessary action to be taken. If you are aware of someone who may be in such
circumstances, please contact, Jim Jack, P.M., Almoner. Tel: 01698 812276. At the Regular Meeting on 22nd.
November, the Brethren of the Lodge were saddened to hear of the death some two
weeks earlier of Bro. Tom McAlpine. Bro. Tom was a quiet and reserved man, he
was Initiated on 8th. January 1947 at the age of 26. He is recorded in the Roll
Book as being a Byreman, but in latter years served as janitor in nearly all of
the local schools. His great love was pigeon racing and he would have many
conversations with the "uninitiated" in the merits of eye sign and
preparation of birds for race. His other great love was his Mother Lodge, and it
was not unusual for him to press a sizable sum into the Treasurers hand as an
anonymous Benevolent donation. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him,
especially the "initiated" who will miss greatly conversations about
the doos. On the 7th. February 1976 the Lodge
celebrated it`s Centenary, exactly 100 years since the Lodge Charter was
granted. The Right Worshipful Master, Bro. George McClintock welcomed a
Deputation from Grand Lodge headed by Bro. Capt. Robert Wolridge Gordon of
Esslemount. At this meeting the Brethren of the
Lodge wore the Lodge Centenary Jewel for the first time. It hardly seems like it
but twenty five years have passed since that night. Next year the Lodge will
celebrate it`s 125th. Anniversary and a Re dedication Ceremony has been planned,
to be conducted by Bro. George R. Kelly, Provincial Gtrand Master. Will you be there?

Installing Masters, Bros. Bruce Reidford, P.M. and James Vasey, P.M. The
Deputation from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Lanarkshire (Middle Ward) will be
led by Bro. James Shanks, Substitute Provincial Grand Master. At the A.G.M. Members of the
Committee of Enquiry were also Elected, these included, James Morrell &
Robin Rodgerson who have been Elected Members for some years. With around £450 already donated to
the Hospice Appeal, the Lodge continues to raise Funds for this worthy cause. On Sunday 15th. October, Bro. Ronnie McCarney and his daughter Lesley completed a sponsored walk around Strathclyde Park. The sum raised was £ 150 which will be added to the total contribution raised by the Lodge.
Bro. Norrie Telfer raised the

A good turn out of Brethren and
Friends attended the Annual Divine Service held on Sunday 28th. October in
Uddingston Old Parish Church. The Lodge are indebted to Rev. Norman McKee
conducting the Service and his warm welcome into the Church. After the Service
the Brethren and Friends retired to the Church Hall where tea and coffee were
served.
After publicising the Display Cabinet
in the last issue we received further donations. Bro. Alasdair Dunlop, P.M.,
presented a firing glass and a specially produced miniature of whisky to
celebrate the Centenary of St. John`s Lodge, Blackpool. We also received a gift
of Past Masters jewels and London Grand Rank jewels (English Constitution) from
the family of Bro. Barnstable, P.M. of Comrades Lodge, London.
A rare Masonic Grandfather Clock has
been presented to the Lodge on loan. The clock mechanism is presently being
refurbished and will feature in the Temple when the work is complete. More on
this Donation in a future issue. Grand Master. Many Brethren were delighted to read
the special article produced by Bro. Archibald Orr Ewing, Grand Master Mason to
mark the 50th. issue of the magazine. The Grand Master is known to regularly
read The Right Angle and we would like to take this opportunity
to thank him for his contribution to last months issue. A large Deputation travelled to
Falkland to visit the Mother Lodge of our Right Worshipful Master, Bro. Andrew
Martin on 27th. October. It was a special occasion for our R.W.M. and it was
fitting that the R.W.M. conducted a large part of the M.M. Degree in his Mother
Lodge.

to the Mark Degree. Principal degree workers were Bros.
Andrew Martin, R.W.M., Gordon Overseers were Bros. Bruce Reidford,
P.M., Pat Clarke, P.M., and Ronnie McCarney, P.M.
Saturday 8th April 2000 will be recorded in the Lodge History as the first visit to the Island by our Lodge. The Right Worshipful Master, Bro. Andrew Martin led a Deputation of 56 Brethren from Lodge St. Bryde and our Sister Lodges to Lodge St. Molios No. 774, Lamlash. The R.W.M. led a Team consisting of, Andrew Reidford, W.J.W., Andrew McAlpine, P.M., Sec., Jim Vasey, P.M., D.o.C. conferred the M.M. Degree on one Candidate. Bro. Pat Clarke, P.M. deputised as W.S.W. Everyone who witnessed the Degree work was most impressed. The word perfect ritual and the sincerity of the manner in which it was delivered was of the highest standard. In fact Bro. Andrew Perrie, R.W.M. No. 774 in his address went as far as to state that it was perhaps the finest M.M. Degree witnessed in Lodge St. Molios. After the meeting the Brethren of Lodge St. Molios provided the company with an excellent buffet meal which was much appreciated by the visiting Brethren. An excellent Harmony followed before the visitors returned to the Hotel at Blackwaterfoot.
Preliminary discussions took place at an informal meeting of Lodge members on Friday 14th. April. The date of Saturday 10th. February 2001 was set for the Re- Dedication it being the nearest Saturday to the Charter date of the 7th. February 1876. It was also decided that a 125th. Anniversary Ball would be held in March 2001 and that a special 125th. Jewel be struck to mark the occasion.
The Grand Lodge year 2000 Year Book is now on sale priced £10. It is a mine of information on all Lodges in the Scottish Constitution and a who`s who in Grand Lodge.
The Quiz in the April Issue seemed to go down quite well - how many did you get? 1. 1736 2. During the recess, from June to September the Lodge Work Party will meet on Wednesday nights at 7.30pm. This is an important time in the working of the Lodge as during this summer break we are able to catch up on those small jobs which need doing to keep our Temple in good condition. The garden and area surrounding the Hall will be a main target for a clean up as it seems to be forever a dumping ground for other peoples rubbish. So if you can spare a few hours on a Wednesday night, contact the Right Worshipful Master. We need your help to make things work!
Recently our Lodge appealed to Life Members to consider making a voluntary donation to The Lodge to offset the Capitation Fee which is payable to Grand Lodge annually by all the Daughter Lodges. This Fee is required to be paid for every Qualified Member of the Lodge. Test Fee paying Members pay (at present) £12 per year to the Lodge, of this £7.60p + VAT (£8.93p) is sent to Grand Lodge in Capitation Fee. Life Members on the other hand pay no Fee to the Lodge per year, but still the Lodge has to send £8.93p annually for their Membership. It may be the case, that a Life Member has not attended the Lodge for some years - but the Lodge still has to return his Fee to Grand Lodge. It is possible that many Life Members may not be aware that their Mother Lodge bears this burden on their behalf and I would appeal to them to make a voluntary donation to offset this cost. If you wish to contribute in this way contact Bro. Andrew McAlpine P.M., Secretary.
At the Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge held in Edinburgh on 6th. May 1999, it was passed that a general Dispensation be granted during the year 2000 in relation to the payment required to be made by a Brother not in good financial standing in his Lodge. The terms of the Dispensation are such that during the year 2000 a Brother not in good standing in his Mother Lodge need only pay the current years Test Fee to restore himself to Qualified Membership. Test Fee paying Members not in good standing and wishing take advantage of this Special Dispensation, should contact Bro. Andrew McAlpine, P.M. Lodge Secretary.
The Lodge at the Regular Meeting of 9th. February 2000 unanimously decided that Bro. David Greenshields, P.M., Secretary of Lodge St. Enoch No. 1288 be granted Honorary Membership of Lodge St. Bryde. This is a privilege which is rarely given, the last Honorary Membership was awarded in 1981 to Bro. Alex Hannah of Lodge Bothwell Brig No. 1229. Infact Bro. David becomes the first Member of Lodge St. Enoch to be awarded the Honour and only the fifth since the second World War. He will be presented with his certificate at the Regular Meeting on Wednesday the 8th. March 2000, a night not to be missed.
At the Regular Meeting of the Lodge held on 23rd. February, Bro. Andrew Martin, R.W.M. presented Bro. William E. Orr, P.M. with a collar jewel, marking him being awarded the Rank of Honorary Grand Junior Deacon by the Grand Master Mason. Bro. Martin, R.W.M. remarked on Bro. Orr`s exemplary record in both Lodge St. Bryde and the Provincial Grand Lodge, where he held the Rank of Provincial Grand Worshipful Senior Warden in 1994 and was Commissioned as Provincial Grand Junior Chaplain in 1996. Bro. William made a suitable reply in which he thanked the members of Lodge St. Bryde for their best wishes and support over many years. He commented on a day in Grand Lodge, last November, which he will never forget, when is name was read out on the Honorary Grand Rank list. Bro. George R. Kelly, Provincial Grand Master, attended the meeting and also commented on Bro. Orr`s achievements.
The Lodge St. Valentines Dance was a great success, and our thanks must go to Bro. Robin Rodgerson who has taken upon himself unofficial role of Lodge Social Convenor. He organised the event which was enjoyed by all who attended and it was a great success. It would be great if another Brother would step forward to assist Bro. Robin in this work which is an important function of the Lodge. WELL DONE !
Deputation to Lodge St. Molios No. 774 Final arrangements have been made for the Deputation to Lodge St. Molios No. 774, Lamlash, Isle of Arran, where the R.W.M. Bro. Andrew Martin will confer the M.M. Degree. The Bus will leave The Masonic Hall, Gardenside St., Uddingston at 10.15 am on Saturday 8th. April. It is important that the bus leaves on time as the bus has been booked on the 12.30pm ferry from Ardrossan. It is hoped that we will arrive at the Kinloch Hotel, Blackwaterfoot around 2.30pm. Brethren will be required to make their own arrangements for lunch. The Hotel has leisure facilities including a 50ft. x 20ft. heated indoor pool, sauna, solarium, fitness room and snooker room. Arrangements have also been made at the 12 hole Shiskine Golf Club, Blackwaterfoot for those Brethren who wish to play on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning the cost is £16. (A special sheet is on the Lodge Notice board for this, or see Jim Jack) The bus will return on the 13.50 ferry on Sunday 9th. April. The balance for the visit is now due !
Honorable , no doubt it is ! For Anoraks who love facts and figures and travel miles to be part of unusual happenings, Lodge St. Bryde on the 8th. March is the place to be. We've had a Millennium and a total eclipse in the last twenty years, but we havn`t had an Honorary Member ! The Lodge in it's wisdom has elected Bro. David Greenshields, P.M., Secretary of Lodge St. Enoch No. 1288 as the first Hon. Member for twenty years. Only the second living, first from 1288, first this Millennium, fifth since the War, around a hundred since the Lodge was Chartered, first named Greenshields and so on ........... to say he was "over the moon" would be an understatement.
Profile- David Greenshields, P.M. 1288. The year 1956 was significant for Bro. David, that was the year that he was Initiated into Lodge St. Enoch No. 1288 and also about the year that he began his National Service with The Royal Scots Fusiliers. During the next two years he visited various Lodges, but in particular, at Glencourse Barracks, Penicuik on the instructions of the R.S.M. he was appointed to lay out the furniture for the Regular Meetings of Lodge Royal Thistle No. 1338. At the close he had to lock past, etc. , make the tea and do the dishes. "A welcome relief from Regimental duties"., said Davie. He took Office in Lodge St. Enoch in 1960 and has been in Office ever since. After his year as R.W.M. in 1969 he continued in Office and agreed to take the Office of Secretary on a temporary basis - over 20 years later he is still the Lodge Secretary. Despite being busy in his Mother Lodge he has always found time to help out in Lodge St. Bryde whenever he was asked. For many years he has stood in as Tyler at Installations, has given his Harmony on many occasions with a splendid singing voice. He proposed the Toast to our Hall at the Diamond Jubilee Re Dedication Dinner and has staffed the Bar at our ticket functions for a number of years. In all a worthy recipient of Honorary Membership of Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 and his name will be proudly added to the Honorary Membership Board.
In the centre of this issue of The Right Angle is a questionnaire produced by the Lodge Secretary to gauge the feeling of the Members (and their Ladies) as to the future format of the Lodge Social Scene. This is an important survey, in that Members will be able to state their ideas on how we should progress. Please return your completed forms by the 23rd. March to the Lodge Secretary.
News from our Sister Lodge Robert Burns in Baillieston is that plans for the extension to the Lodge Temple are well under way. Building work is due to start in the Summer and should be completed by the end of the recess. A Consecration Ceremonial will be conducted by Provincial Grand Lodge, further details in future issues. n our Prayers. Shortly after the St. Valentines Dance, Bro. John McLeod suffered a severe stroke and is presently in Monklands Hospital. We hope and pray that he will be restored to full health and in the fullness of time will return and sit with us in the Lodge. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . end of March 2000 news
Bro. Andrew Martin, R.W.M. led an excellent Deputation of seventeen Brethren to our Sister Lodge St. Enoch No. 1288 on Wednesday 19th. January. The visit was the first of the Millennium and it was fitting that our first Deputation should be to nearest Brethren.
The last Lodge St. Bryde Meeting of the Millennium was held on Wednesday 22nd. December 1999. After the Meeting the Brethren present gathered in their regalia to have an historic photo taken. The photo has been reproduced in the centre of this issue of The Right Angle by Bro. Graham Brown. If any Brother would like a glossy 8"x6" copy of this photo contact the Editor.
As previously reported Bro. William E. Orr, P.M. was presented with his Honorary Grand Rank Certificate by the Provincial Grand Master at the P.G.L. Annual General Meeting. The Lodge has traditionally presented any Member receiving such an Honour with a neck jewel suitably inscribed. The presentation of Bro. Willie Orr`s jewel will take place at the Regular Meeting held on Wednesday 23rd. February. This date will be the forty second anniversary of his Initiation into Lodge St. Bryde No. 579. R.W.M. Andrew Martin requests a large attendance of Brethren at this meeting to pay tribute to our Distinguished Brother.
Ranbir Singh Bhopal The Right Worshipful Master and Brethren of the Lodge are delighted to welcome Ranbir Singh Bhopal as a New Member of the Lodge. Ranbir was initiated on Wednesday 12th. January 2000 by Bro. Andrew Reidford, W.J.W. and his Team. He is an engineer who with his brother, is the proprietor of a local garage. His Proposer is Bro. Bal Sharma, Jeweller and Seconder, Gordon Stevenson, Junior Deacon.
The Millennium Jar containing photos, programmes and other memorabilia has been sealed and deposited in a "safe and sacred repository" until time or circumstance discovers it`s origin. But where is it to be found? Not telling ! Only the Editor knows the exact location and he is not saying where. So hopefully sometime in the future when we are all gone, a young Brother will discover this time capsule and reveal it`s contents in The Right Angle. (Which by then will be available on video on a selected channel of your wrist watch).
At the recent Installation of Lodge Bothwell Brig No. 1229 it was suggested that the three Lodges organise a Re - Union for the Millennium. This seemed to be a great idea, especially as it seems like years since we had the last one. The Re - union of Lodges always were popular and although they were held Annually at one time the three Lodges agreed to hold them when "the time felt right". I am not sure if this has been discussed at Committee level but perhaps it could be organised as part of the Millennium celebrations.
It is great to hear that our Sister Lodge has approved plans to double the size of the present Temple. Work on the project is due to start in the summer and the Lodge hope to have works completed by the end of the recess. They plan to have a Special Meeting to Consecrate and formally open the New Temple. The Right Angle will keep Members informed of these developments.
Plans for the visit to Lodge St. Molios No. 774, Isle of Arran on the 8th. April are now well advanced. The bus is full and there is a waiting list for places. I would ask that Brethren who have paid their deposit, please note that the balance must be paid by Wednesday 8th. March. Your co operation with this would be greatly appreciated.
end of February 2000 news . . . . . .
The final part of the programme of events to mark the 75th. Anniversary of the Masonic Hall was a visit by representatives of the Lodge to the Gateway Club whose meeting nights have been held in the Hall for over 30 years During this time the the Lodge can be justifiably proud of it`s support for the work of the Club in catering for the social needs of adults with learning difficulties. The origins of the Gateway Club in Uddingston is interesting although not very well documented and is bound up in the formation of charities such as Enable (formerly the S.S.M.H.) and it`s English equivalent Mencap. The Scottish Society was formed in April 1954 when five families met in Glasgow to discuss setting up an organisation to help support themselves and their children with learning difficulties and 45 years later that organisation - now known as Enable- has around 4000 members within it`s 68 branches spread over the length and breadth of Scotland. Similarly, the origins of the Uddingston branch can be traced back to about 1967 when local families met in each other`s homes to discuss the formation of a Club for the young adult members of their family with learning difficulties. At that time there had been an Occupational Training Centre in Viewpark for many years which was available during the day to cater for the needs of learning difficulty children within the community, and it was felt by the families that a Club Night would facilitate the social requirements of these young adults and provide them with a meeting place wherein they could enjoy each other`s company. Their aspirations were similar to the Gateway Club concept which had begun in England, a committee was set up to inaugurate the Gateway Club and to find suitable premises locally. The link with the Lodge was through Bro. James F. Scott, the R.W.M. of the Lodge at that time and a long serving Secretary who was one of the founding members of the Gateway Club, the only one of it`s kind in Scotland. It is through the enduring work of the Scott family, of retired Headmaster Joe Gillan and his family and many more down through the years to present long serving committee members Heather Shanks, Grace Mundell and Margaret Houston that the work of the Club continues to fulfil a need in the lives of the adults with learning difficulties who live in the community of Uddingston and District. Down through the years they have all been very appreciative of the Lodge for giving the Masonic Hall to them free of charge, for giving financially through annual donations to their Club funds and for the moral support of Lodge members. It was to mark the 75th. Anniversary year of the Masonic Hall that R.W.M. Bro. Andrew Martin, I.P.M. Scott Moore and Lodge Secretary Bro. Andrew McAlpine, P.M. attended the Christmas Party of the Club and witnessed for themselves the joy that was evident on the faces of the Club members as they enjoyed the Christmas Party festivities. The Lodge can be very proud of the beneficent and charitable work enacted within it`s own premises over these past thirty years. Here`s to the continuance of such acts in the new millennium. The last Lodge Christmas Draw had some great prizes. Top prize was a portable colour TV donated by the R.W.M., the winning ticket was sold by A. Hamilton, P.M. Our thanks to all those who helped organise the event, especially, Bro. Alasdair Dunlop, S.D. for all his hard work. The draw raised the total of £800 towards the Christmas Draw. English Visit. Members of Tenby Lodge 1177 attended the 8th. December meeting. It was a proud night for Bro. Bal Sharma who welcomed his son Steven (a member of 1177) into Lodge St. Bryde. In all it was a great occasion and Bro. Heddwyn Williams P.G.L. South Wales made suitable comment on the Degree by Bro. Andrew Martin, R.W.M.
The last meeting of the Millennium was well attended by Brethren and Visitors. Bro. Gordon Reidford, W.S.W. conferred the F.C. Degree in an excellent manner, to the obvious delight of the assembled Brethren. Bro. Robert Welsh being the last candidate to receive a Degree this Millennium. After the meeting Brethren were invited to sign a special attendance sheet and a photo was taken of all those who were present, both scheduled to be placed in the Millennium Jar. Last month Frank Penman the son of Bro. James Penman sent an E mail to the Homepage asking for information about his father who was a member of 579 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1962. The Roll book reveals that James Penman was Initiated on 12th. Dec. 1956, a joiner aged 46, of 72 Langside Ave., Viewpark. He also sent a letter to the Lodge Secretary in 1972 asking if he could be sent a 579 Apron. If any Brother has any further information, please pass this on to the Ed.
Alan Campbell Substitute Provincial Grand Master. The Brethren of Lodge St. Bryde were delighted and highly honoured that the family of the late Bro. Alan Campbell, P.M. Lodge Major Ness No. 948, Substitute Provincial Grand Master gifted his Past Provincial Grand Worshipful Senior Wardens jewel to the display cabinet of our Lodge. Bro. Alan spoke very warmly about Lodge St. Bryde and previously donated Masonic plates from Germany to the display cabinet. The jewel will be placed beside that of our other great friend, the late Bro. Walter Blower, Substitute Provincial Grand Master. Bro. Robert Laird, Architect, has been appointed by Grand Lodge as The Proxy Junior Warden of Lodge Que Que Kilwinning No. 1320. The Lodge meets in the MacDonald Temple, Kwe Kwe, Zimbabwe and was Chartered on 7th. February 1924. It is interesting to note that No. 1320 was Chartered on 7th. February, the same date as Lodge St. Bryde No. 579. Bro. James Haddow a P.M. of Burns Immortal No. 1730 was until his death Proxy Master of the Lodge and visited it on many occasions when in Zimbabwe visiting relatives.
With many Lodges taking up the challenge of technology, Grand Lodge have recently introduced guidelines for lodges who wish to establish a Website. They are generally fairly straight forward and our site conforms to the new criteria, although we have had our site established for nearly eighteen months. On the home front our site has passed the 900 visitor mark since its formation. The 1999 Installation photographs are now posted - click here to view
Bro. Davy Dawson, P.M., the Lodge St. Bryde "Webmaster" received an E mail from Bro. Furokh Santoke of Lodge The Rising Star of Western India No. 342 (Scottish Constitution), congratulating our Lodge on their excellent site and asking permission to establish a link between the Websites of 579 & 342. As it was our initial intention when setting up the Website to try to build up contacts with other Lodges from various parts of the world as we have done with North Shore Lodge in Florida and this is an excellent opportunity to establish further contacts. Davy has set up the link and access is now available to No. 342 Website from our Homepage. (see under links to other Websites).
