District Grand Lodge of The Bahamas visit to Lodge
St. Enoch After their historic visit to Lodges in The Bahamas it was the turn of Lodge St. Enoch No. 1288 to play hosts to a Deputation from the District Grand Lodge. Bro. Idris Reid, District Grand Master led a Deputation of ten Brethren from his District supported by Brethren from Provincial Grand Lodges. The
Provincial Deputation included two Provincial Grand Masters, Bro. Alex Galbraith
(Renfrewshire West) and Bill Lansburgh (Lanarkshire Upper Ward) Bro. Kenneth D.
Kennedy, our P.G.M. was engaged at the Lodge Burns Immortal 25th.
Anniversary but joined the Dinner
later. Our Temple was packed as Bro. Edgar Moxey, assumed
the chair of the Lodge and with the assistance of the visiting Brethren
conferred the M.M. Degree on Bro. Derek Campbell the son of P.M. Bro. Stephen
Campbell of 1288. Bro. Campbell had received his F.C. Degree in The Bahamas and
was part of what must have been a unique experience of having his Degrees conferred by a District Grand Lodge both “home and
away”. The M.M. Degree was conferred in a very sincere
manner, which was a credit to the rearranged Degree Team whose numbers had been
reduced due to the storm damage caused by the recent hurricane in the Caribbean.
At the conclusion of the meeting the collection which amounted to £200 was
presented to Bro. Idris Reid, District Grand Master to assist with the hurricane
damage repairs. The Brethren enjoyed an excellent harmony and buffet
supplied by the members of the Lodge.
Oct 2004 Our
Province received a tremendous boost
by the announcement that Bro. George R. Kelly is to be installed as Assistant
Grand Director of Ceremonies, Kenneth D. Kennedy as Senior
Grand Standard-bearer and James L. Jack as Grand Steward in the Grand Lodge of
Scotland. We wish these Brethren well and look forward to the Installation in
November.
Quarterly
Communication. The Summer Quarterly Communication (held on 2nd. July) was
the first ever to be hosted by Lodge St. Andrew Strathaven No. 215. The meeting
was very well attended and the effort by the 215 Brethren in setting up the Hall
and providing the tea & coffee after the meeting made it a tremendous
evening. Bro.
John Muir, P.G. Committee is collecting funds for the Malcolm Sargent Cancer
Trust and after the meeting had a retiring collection for the worthy cause. The
total amount collected was £176 and John would like to thank all those who
contributed. New
Districts. After some discussion, the new P.G.L. Districts will come into effect from 1st. February 2005. The changes will be minimal
and really affect the Annual Book Inspections and a few Annual Visit dates. The
reason for the changes is to realign the five Districts into local areas, as
over the years some Lodges have changed their meeting place, but the Districts
have remained unchanged. New
format for P.G.L. Meetings? At the July Communication, Bro. Kenneth D.
Kennedy, P.G.M. indicated that the P.G.L. Quarterly Communications could be
changed to align with the new Grand Lodge dates. The present format of A.G.M.
January, Installation of Office Bearers March, Quarterly
Communications April, July and October may be changed to drop the July
Communication and rearrange the dates of the remaining meetings. The issue will
be provisionally discussed at the August meeting of Commissioned Office Bearers
and if any changes are recommended they will be brought before P.G.L. Next
Meeting. The next Communication of P.G.L. will be held in Wishaw (No.31) on
Friday 1st. October at 7.30 pm. R.K.S.

Mar 2004
We are delighted that the Annual Divine Service of Provincial Grand Lodge of Lanarkshire (Middle Ward) will be held in The Old Parish Church, Uddingston on Sunday 18th. April at 6 pm for 6.30 pm. The Service will be conducted by Rev. Norman McKee and Bro. Rev. Peter O. Price, Senior Provincial Grand Chaplain. It is important that this Service is well attended and our R.W.M. Bro. Bob Edgar requests that Lodge St. Bryde No. 579 Members, Family and Friends attend in numbers.
Provincial Grand Lodge Seminar Speakers . The members of Lodge St.
Bryde were delighted to host the first Provincial Bro. Kenneth D. Kennedy,
P.G.M. welcomed the Brethren present and especially invited guests which
included Bro. Walter Sneddon, Chairman of the Grand Lodge Communications
Committee. The response to the
Seminar has been tremendous with around 180 Brethren from around 30 Lodges in
the Province taking a keen interest. Bro. George R. Kelly, I.P.P.G.M. has been involved with the Grand Lodge Education Committee and more recently within the reorganised Communications Committee. George had organised a programme of speakers to give a varied theme to this first Seminar. George set the tone of the
day by delivering a presentation on the qualities required by young Office
Bearers who had a desire to progress to the Chair of their Lodge. The training
programme had been devised to target the needs of these Brethren and thus lead
to a coaching programme that would develop these needs and prepare them for the
future. George had developed the presentation which had been approved by Grand
Lodge and had been well received at a East Renfrewshire Seminar. Rev. Peter Price,
P.G.
Senior Chaplain presented at paper that had been compiled in response to an
article in The Life And Work Magazine. The paper featured in our
Right Angle Magazine and had received much acclaim on our Homepage. Peter
developed the theme of his paper and much to the delight of those present made
light of the serious tone of the Life and Work article. A buffet lunch was
provided free of charge by P.G.L., although the Brethren present responded by
making a small donation to offset the cost. The afternoon session
started with Jim Jack, P.G. Secretary giving a Powerpoint presentation on the
International Masonic Exhibition that was held in Tours, France. Bro. Jack explained that
the the exhibition was drawn from Masonic bodies from throughout Europe and that
it was important from the fact that this was the first time that The Grand Lodge
of Scotland had exhibited at such an event. The exhibition lasted for
three months and had been sponsored by the local authority and was open to the
public. This had been a great opportunity to raise the profile of our Grand
Lodge. Bro. J. Stewart Wood,
D.P.G.M. concluded the Seminar by presenting a thoughtful paper entitled
"The greatest secret of all". Bro. Wood was skilful in his delivery
and at the conclusion answered questions to the satisfaction of those present. All in all the event went
well and the feeling of the Brethren present was that this should be a regular
feature with P.G.L. arranging venues and speakers. Bro. Walter Sneddon in his
closing remarks expressed his delight that the Provinces were moving in the
right direction with regard to Masonic education and hoped that our future
programmes were as successful as this first Seminar. Lectures. Bro. James L.
Jack, P.M. gave an excellent lecture on the Masonic Exhibition which was held in
Tours, France in 2002 at a packed Lodge Pioneer No. 1305 meeting in Linlithgow
on Friday 20th. February. Bro. Jack has been invited
to present lectures at Lodge Darvel No. 971 on Thursday 25th. March and at Lodge
Whifflet St. John No. 963 on Tuesday 13th. April. He will also present a new
lecture on Freemasons at Gettysburg at the Regular Meeting on Wednesday 26th.
May. Judging by the interest in this subject it should be a well attended
meeting.

Grand Ball. Over 180 Brethren and Ladies attended
the Millennium Ball held in the Hamilton Town Hall on 13th. October. The event
was a tremendous success and Bro. George R. Kelly, P.G.M. presented Sister
Catherine and Mr. Sam Lavery, Appeals Co ordinator with an initial cheque for £7,000.
This was indeed a tremendous effort on behalf of the Lodges in the Province as
the target sum for presentation on the night was £5,000. It is hoped that the
sum of £10, 000 will be reached by the end of the year. One shocking factor is,
that despite the size of our contribution it will only cover the running costs
of the Hospice for 3 days!
Installation. The Installation of the New Provincial Grand Master will take place on Saturday, 26th. May 2001 in The Concert Hall within the Civic Centre, Motherwell. The Ceremony will be conducted by the Grand Master Mason and a Deputation from Grand Lodge. Further details will be included in future issues of The Right Angle.

P.G.L. Membership Fees are now due. If you

The Grand Lodge Ad Hoc Committee report on Masonic Education and Membership has been passed to Provincial Grand Masters for their comment. Bro. George R. Kelly, Provincial Grand Master has decided that the Lodges in our Province should have the opportunity to express their opinion on the report. He has decided that after the recess all Lodge Secretaries will receive a copy of the report from Provincial Grand Secretary and later in the year a number of seminars will be arranged to discuss the paper. After this has been done the Provincial Grand Master will report the feelings of our Province to Grand Committee.
The Millennium Appeal on behalf of St. Andrew`s Hospice is progressing well. To date £2000 has been raised and Lodges in the Province are actively involved in Fund Raising events. Andrew Millar and two other Brethren of Lodge Kirkhill No. 1230 are set to run in the Glasgow Marathon and Morris Smith, Provincial Grand Organist is producing a C.D. of popular music from the 60`s to the 90`s in aid of the Fund. The C.D. will sell for around £8 and all the recording and production is being done by Morris.
A Provincial Grand Lodge lapel badge is presently being manufactured by Kirkwood & Sons. of Edinburgh. The badge will be in Thistle Green enamel and either Gold or Silver gilt. The price of each badge is £5 and the profits will go towards the Appeal. It is hoped to have these badges available at the July Quarterly Communication.
The Annual Divine Service of Provincial Grand Lodge will be held in Hamilton West Parish Church on Sunday 2nd. April at 6 for 6.30pm. We are privileged that The Service will be conducted by Bro. Rev. Stanley Cook, who this year is the Moderator of Hamilton Presbytery. Bro. Stanley has over many years been a faithful supporter of Provincial Grand Lodge and many of the Daughter Lodges. The R.W.M. of Lodge St. Bryde and The Provincial Grand Master, request a large attendance of Office Bearers and Brethren at this important Service.
The A.G.M. was held in the Masonic Temple, Uddingston on Friday 14th. January and the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Bro. George R. Kelly welcomed the 159 Brethren to the first meeting of the new Millennium. The formal business included the approval of the Accounts to 30th. November 1999 and the Election of Office Bearers and Members of Committee for 2000. The composition of the various P.G.L. Committees was also approved. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of Honorary Grand Rank Certificates. P. G. Director of Ceremonies Bro. William Innes introduced Bro. William E. Orr, P.M. 579, P.P.G.W.S.W., P.G. Junior Chaplain and Bro. James B. Morton P.M., Secretary 1230. The P.G.M. praised the commitment of the two Brethren over many years to their Mother Lodges and Provincial Grand Lodge and presented them with their certificates as Honorary Grand Junior Deacon and Assistant Secretary respectively. At the conclusion of the meeting the collection amounted to £185. The New Year Draw held after the A.G.M. raised the fantastic sum of £984, which is a great way to launch the Hospice Project. In fact the project received three donations totalling £200 before the official launch on the 14th. Brethren will be aware that the P.G.M. has declared the year 2000 Non Masonic Charity Year and has invited Lodges in the Province to join in the Project to raise funds for St. Andrew`s Hospice, Airdrie. The main event will be the Grand Millennium Ball to be held in Hamilton Town Hall on 13th. October 2000. Lodge St. Bryde Members who would like to apply for tickets should give their names to the Lodge Secretary, Bro. Andrew McAlpine as soon as possible, demand is high and it looks as if a ballot will be made to allocate tickets. At the A.G.M. Bro. Ronnie McCarney was elected for a third term as Provincial Grand Tyler. Bro. Ronnie has carried out his duties over the last few years in a very efficient manner and we hope that this continues for many years to come. Our Lodge was further Honoured when Bro. Bruce Reidford was elected for the first term as Provincial Auditor. Bruce stood in to audit the accounts after the untimely death of Bro. Ronnie Falconer and Provincial Grand Lodge have been impressed by his skills. The Installation of Office Bearers will take place on Friday 3rd. March in the Masonic Temple, Cambuslang (114) at 7.30pm. The Installing Masters will be Bros. Jack Mathie, Substitute Provincial Grand Master and Jim Jack, Provincial Grand Secretary. Brethren who are not P.G.L. Members are most welcome to attend the meeting and the dinner to follow.
An attendance of over 100 Brethren attended Lodge Airdrie St. John No. 166 on Wednesday 19th. January to witness the unveiling of a Millennium memorial plaque in the Temple. The P.G.M. carried out the ceremony and complemented the R.W.M. and Brethren on their ideas to mark the New Millennium. The Lodge had produced a new Mark Token and had engaged in special Fund Raising efforts. The St. Andrew`s Hospice Appeal benefited by being awarded a cheque for £200. It was also great to see Lodge Airdrie St. John`s oldest Past Master present at the meeting. Bro. Robert Jack, P.M. is 94 years old and was first in the chair of his Mother Lodge in 1932 ! Application forms for the year 2000 season have been sent out to all Lodge Secretaries. If you would like to apply for a short holiday at the Provincial Grand Lodge Caravan at the Dutch House, Monkton in Ayrshire between April and October, then contact the Lodge Secretary.

The Following is a copy of a letter from Bro. George R. Kelly, Dec 1999 Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master sent to all Lodges in the Province.
Brethren, I would like to express my personal congratulations and thanks to all those Brethren who contributed in any way to the success of the Provincial Grand Lodge Millennium Project. As you will be aware the Millennium Project was established to raise sufficient funds to purchase a New Holiday Caravan for the benefit of needy Brethren and their dependants. The fund-raising target was set at £15,000 with the hope that the Province could raise this sum by the end of the year 2000. I am delighted to inform you that at the time of writing the sum raised stands at £21,000 (£6,000 more than the target). In view of this great achievement by our Province, I have proposed that the fund be closed at 31st. December 1999 and utilise the year 2000 for a Non Masonic Fund Raising Project. A Grand Charity Ball has been arranged in Hamilton Town Hall on Friday, 13th. October 2000, the total surplus from this event will be donated by the Province to St. Andrews Hospice, Airdrie. During the period leading to the Charity Ball, I would encourage and welcome Lodges in the Province to participate in this fund-raising effort. As we move into the New Millennium this will be a good opportunity to show the people of Lanarkshire that Lanarkshire Freemasons care about the community in which we live.
New Substitute Provincial Grand Master Commissioned. Bro. George R. Kelly, Provincial Grand Master has Commissioned Bro. Jack Mathie as Substitute Provincial Grand Master. Jack is a Past Master of Lodge Hamilton No. 233 and brings a wealth of experience to the Commissioned Office Bearers Team. He is a Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden, Past Substitute Provincial Grand Master (Commissioned 1988-96) and holds Honorary Grand Rank of Junior Deacon. He will take over from the late Bro. Alan Campbell.
Millennium Project News October 1999. The great news is, that since the Project`s launch in October 1997 Lodges in the Province have raised the fantastic sum of £20,500. £5500 more than the target and achieved with a year to spare! The new Caravan which was purchased in April has just completed it`s first season at The Dutch House Caravan Park and judging by the favourable comments in the visitors book, it has been a very successful first season. Application forms for the year 2000 season can be obtained from the Lodge Secretary, Andrew McAlpine. The Deputation from P.G.L. at the Installation of Office Bearers will be headed by our own Past Master Bro. William E. Orr, Provincial Grand Junior Chaplain. This will be the first time that Bro. Willie has officially lead a P.G.L. Deputation into his Mother Lodge.
That is the question that everyone is asking, will the Provincial Grand Lodge Millenium Project reach the fantastic total of £20,000 by the year 2000? The total smashed through the the £15,000 target months ago and presently sits around the £19,500 mark! Wouldn't it be great if we could top the £20K by Y2K! Back

Millennium
Report No.4 - September 1999. When I started compiling this Newsletter
in July I chose the headline, £2OKbyY2K? meaning that it would be
tremendous if the Millennium Project overshot the original target of £15,000
and reached £20,000 by the year 2000. Little did I know that within a month the
Lodges in our Province would again pass a milestone and the £20,000 barrier
would be broken so soon. This has been an absolutely tremendous achievement.
Looking back to when the Project was launched at the Quarterly Communication at
Larkhall on 3rd. October 1998 by the Provincial Grand Master, Bro George R.
